Colonoscopy - kind of gross

I am scheduled to have a colonoscopy performed tomorrow. This is a routine thing, done every three years, because of my age and because I had colon cancer eleven years ago. This will be the fifth time to have it done for me, and it's no a fun thing. :(

The worst part is the preparation. Because my colon has to be clear, the day before the procedure, which will be this afternoon, I have to drink a gallon of laxative. I will basically spend all this PM sitting on the toilet.

The actuall process is inserting a wire with a miniature video camera in my ass and taping the inside of my colon to look for tumors or polyps, which are potential tumors. Polyps are removed right away. Actual tumors will be removed either right away or as soon as possible in a bowel resection operation. Hopefully, that won't be necessary. :(

This procedure is never fun and the prep is less enjoyable. Find a good book or charge a laptop. Best of luck tomorrow.

Good luck. I know how unpleasant those things are. Try to get them to give ya a little happy pill before they do it. I hear they will do so if you ask for one.

I just had an endoscopy about six months ago. Fortunately, I only need one every five years. It is interesting, though, because they project what the camera sees up on a screen where you can watch. It's sort of a tape worm's view of the human condition. :D

Having been there, I sort of wonder where a book or laptop would ever enter into the procedure.

During the, uh, preparatory phase this evening..not the actual procedure.:D

Oh, OK. Gotcha. I can read on the pot, yes I can. Half sedated and on my side on a gurney--not so much. Must admit I'd never thought of writing about it on a chat board before.

It is truly amazing what we share...

I sort of enjoy the liquid laxative part. It brings back fond memories from the good old days - that lovely feeling right before you start puking from drinking too much Red Mountain vin rose.

I'm going to start the process at 3PM, less than an hour from now, and I will bring my laptop upstairs to our bedroom and, hopefully, get some writing done. Maybe I will even think up some kind of fetish story during the process., although this is not the kind of thing I usually write about.

Been there, done that, rode the porcelain bus for a good while beforehand. I had my last colonoscopy in January, 09. Good luck with yours Box and I hope they don't find anything adverse. ;)

Good Luck, Box. You're right, the prep ain't no fun, but they usually give you some good drugs for the procedure. Seriously, I hope everything goes well.

Well, everything went well. The prep was unpleasant, as I knew it would be, and it was raining heavily today, but the test came out completely negative. No tumors and no polyps either. I won't need another colonoscopy for three more years. :)

I have had a few of these -- not the worst indignity I have gone through to verify that I am perferctly healthy. But the last one I did was sheduled for 7 am -- of course we had to be there much earlier, and the place was a hour away. You get the idea.

So I am lying there all prepped at 7, and no doctor. The nurse is starting to fret that the doctor didn't bother to check his scheule, and doesn't think he has to start until 8. Plus, he is always a half hour late. Sure enough, he showed up promptly at 8:30.
'
I was on a blood pressure monitor the whole time, and there was no way of hiding how annoyed I was -- you could just see the blood pressure rising.

Anyway -- if you think this is bad try a prostate biopsy.

Great news! :D
