Heath Ledger was awarded a pity-Oscar that rightfully should have gone to PSH. I'd argue that he was more deserving of one in 2006, when PSH took the best actor Oscar for "Capote."
I think he should have got the Oscar for BB Mountain and for his role as the joker. PSH was amazing in Capote though...agreeably a tough call that year.
Hmmm. I guess I wasn't very impressed because it's from the part of the world where I come from.
Because I've grown up watching those kind of movies. The script is very much like a number of Hindi movies that came out in the 70s (Look up Amitabh Bachchan's body of work in the 1970s if you're interested). I've already seen everything in it - multiple times. At times, it was done better than it is in Slumdog Millionaire.Im interested! Why weren't you impressed?

Doesn't mean it wasn't good. It just wasn't better than what I had already seen. So, wasn't impressed.
This is another issue entirely from my not being impressed with the movie. And my impression of the movie has nothing to do with the tension it has generated. That is another issue too.I am interested - thats why I asked! Havent seen many Bollywood films and have just googled Amitabh Bachchan. I can understand the tension that Slumdog has initiated but don' you think that it may bring Bollywood films more to prominence in the West?

Incidentally, I don't agree with the criticism of the title or of the subject (projects a bad / wrong view of India, etc.) But as I said, that's another topic entirely.
It's good if the movie generates interest in Bollywood films but I don't think it will. It was not a Bollywood movie. It was Hollywood movie set in India and with characters who were Indian, that's all.
Well, I have grown up watching the same kind of movies! Imagine if a tried and tested Hollywood movie formula (say Westerns) was regurgitated into a new movie. Even if it was a very good movie you wouldn't be absolutely thrilled with it other than saying it's a good movie. I have seen that kind of script a lot of times before. It's...usual. Done before. And therefore, not as impressive. You are right it is not a Bollywood movie but its not a Hollywood movie either really - but you are right it was a Western movie set in India with Indian characters - which is why I loved it - I wish you would explain why you were unimpressed with it a bit more!

As I told you, the rags to riches story, the love story, the poverty -- everything's been done multiple times in Bollywood. Traffic Signal, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Bunty Aur Babli are a few of the movies that came to mind when I saw Slumdog Millionaire.
Does that explain it better?
I'm not even sure it's using a different focus. It's using a different production house and a different language.Yes it does - like it has in Western movies (lets face it all stories are the same!) - so this movie is just using a different focus - is that good or bad?

I like Danny Boyle's work too and really, I'm not panning the movie. I am just trying to tell you why it is not as impressive to me. It is a good movie (but to nod to the opening post, not the best I've seen this year. I saw Water in January and Oh my God, that was heartbreakingly beautiful. Not to say Water was released in the past year. But you know what I mean.)I do understand what you are saying but I am also a fan of Danny Boyle (not just this film) and i do think that he has made a film that might just make the West sit up and notice aspects of India that they didnt before - or do ou really think he is just riding on the Bollywood bandwagon?
