Obama has decided it would be a good idea to fund health care for children by raising taxes on tobacco products. - Can you say "cross purposes" boys and girls?

Maybe we can keep our children healthy if we encourage our teenagers to start smoking.

Oh wait Senator Tom Harkin is trying to add 75 million to the stimulus package to help stop smoking. Can you say "cross purposes" boys and girls?

No word on where Obama plans to get the money if any or all the anti smoking campaigns work.

So, he raised taxes on cigarettes to fund health care in the hopes that higher taxes will encourage people to stop smoking and cut funding for health care.

sin taxes are a good way to make quick cash off of addicts. in the short term they work wonders until people are forced to cut back. i just hope they don't fuck with tax class j. they can raise the tax on class a all they want. i have a rolling machine and filter tubes. i'm fucking set.

I'm not sure where to start.

How about "raises the bar on stupid"..
"I do not think that means what you think it means." But I can understand your confusion.

Next: How exactly is raising taxes on cigarettes encouraging anyone to smoke?

Increasing taxes on smokers also encourages them to quit by making the habit less desirable because of the expense. Less smokers means less healthcare expense due to smoking related disease, means more money for other healthcare.

Smokers are a drain on taxes because they end up getting sick and on medicare.

Making them pay more for their coffin nails to pay for kids healthcare is a great idea.

( I quit when smokes went above 2 bucks a pack..ok 3.)

:p

Smoking is still legal... I'm all for taxing the hell out of the disgusting habit of smoking WHILE also trying to stop new smokers from starting to save their lives...

There isn't a conflict here at all... I don't see why you are having a problem with this...

That's three of us here. We need a thread on brands.

I like American Spirit, Original Blend.

Oh, and those $20 rolling machines suck like a Hoover. Great for the all of 2-3 months it takes them to break.

He has a problem because a Democrat is doing it. It's the only reason.

i smoke gambler turkish blend because it's fucking cheap and i meant to say just filters. i buy them in bags at 100 for a buck. my rolling machine cost two bucks. they usually last a few months before the canvas starts to tear and then i have to spend another two bucks or simply tape the tear if i'm feeling cheap.

Dear Word Detective: Here in Australia we "whinge" where Americans "whine." "Whinge" is a fabulous word and many Americans with whom I have had contact have latched onto it. My Macquarie dictionary doesn't note it as slang and its use is very widespread in the land up over (who said south was down, north was up anyway?). Is it a derivation of "whine" and where do both words come from? An American friend, encountering "whinge" for the first time, defined it as a "whining binge," which is very creative and I wish it were true but alas I fear it is not. -- Sara Clarke, Australia.

Nope, sorry, although "whining binge" has a nice ring to it. "Whinge" (which rhymes with "hinge") has always been common in the U.K. and Australia, but it seems to have hired itself a North American press agent recently. It's showing up more and more in U.S. media, and I've received a number of questions about "whinge" in just the last month. Cynic that I am, I suspect that the increased visibility of "whinge" may be due to the inveterate Anglophilia of certain upper strata of U.S. society. It is, for instance, now routine to hear well-off young people in New York City pretentiously refer to their "flat," meaning their apartment. Personally, I find that sort of play-acting vaguely pathetic, but your mileage may vary.

In any case, "whinge" is basically the same word as our good old-fashioned "whine," meaning "to complain peevishly." Both whinge" and "whine" are ultimately from the Germanic "hwinan," meaning "to whine." The "ge" ending of "whinge" is evidence of its origin as the Scots and Northern English form of "whine," much as "clenge" and "ringe" were at one time the Northern forms of "cleanse" and "rinse."

"Whinge" is, for a word newly trendy in America at least, remarkably old. It comes directly from the Old English word "hwinsian," and first appeared in its modern English spelling in the early 18th century.

Remember when I said the last pussy loser bitch thread this douche made was the epitome of epic fail?

I take it all back. This one's surpassed the previous. He's like the Pokémon of pussy loser bitch whiners, 'cuz he just evolved himself from Slowlane Level 1 to Slowlane Level 2.

The UK's tax revenue from cigarettes and tobacco is sufficent to repay the health costs associated with smoking three or four times over.

Smokers are subsidising health care for everyone.

Og

PS. The UK's tax revenue from vehicles and vehicle fuel has been raided for the general tax fund since the 1930s. Now less than 25% of those taxes are spent on road and traffic infrastructure - so drivers are subsidising other tax payers.

Yeah, like they saved the 200 billion they milked out of the tobacco companies to "save the children", and relieve our burdened health system.

A rip off, of greater magnitude than the 50 billion Madoff raid.

I have no problem with so called "sin taxes". The problem with using them to fund health care is that it is supposed to be self defeating. When that happens you can bet your ass that the program won't be cut. The program will go on and the money will have to come from somewhere else.

Colorado's amendment 35 is showing how well this strategy works - with a 42 million dollar shortfall of revenues in the first year and smoker numbers declining. Tax revenues are down (as of Dec 08) 20% and once the reserve is used up the fund will need to start cutting services.

It's a bad idea that will result in shortfalls within five years. That shortfall will have to be made up from another pocket.

Like GC says, they've promised this shit before.

The Kennedys would have a fit.

Smokers can always quit.

Drinkers can always stop drinking.

You, however, will forever be a moron, a douchebag, and a coward.

And I know...I know....you have me on ignore. Because you're afraid of the truth.

No worries. His name says it all. It would be ironic if it weren't so obvious.

In all fairness to him, I don't think he knows what "ironic" means.....or "obvious" for that matter.

It amazes me that his brain generates enough energy to move his fingers to type....

I think he has a gerbil on a treadmill attached to some wires as a secondary power source.

Don't ask me what else he does with the gerbil when its not running, though.
