Joe, the former plumber, just can't seem to get any love or respect. Especially from the Media.

Ya know, I understand that, historically, little known, average folk have now and again done something that got their names into the newspaper or the public eye, and, thanks to that unexpected moment of fame, perhaps moved into a new profession. I believe the movie Meet John Doe is all about that, isn't it? And I understand the presumed appeal of Joe, at first, when it was thought that he was a plumber and was asking an honest question of Obama, and, therefore *seemed* to be speaking for small business folk who felt they might be screwed by new taxes.

But at this point, I'm completely lost. I don't get it. I mean, he's not a plumber, he didn't have a business that was going to be taxed, he wasn't named Joe...wouldn't that give someone pause before giving him a platform? But okay, fine, he's got name recognition; still, wouldn't it make sense to have him investigate and/or pontificate on taxes or small businesses or the hardships of the average guy?

But...sending him to report on the war in Gaza???? Can anyone explain this?

It's ridiculous. So is he.

And so is anyone who actually believes he has something intelligent to say.

Why anyone who could make a small fortune installing toilets and unclogging sinks would willingly go into a war zone is beyond me.

What qualifies him as a war correspondent anyhow? Other than a bland disregard for his own life.

I think Sarah told him to do it.

He's famous.

That's enough for his opinion to be sought on anything.

Why do we listen to what prominent actors say about any subject? How are they qualified to advise us on politics, morals, or any issue of the day?

They might have something worthwhile to say. They might be qualified as experts in the tools necessary for their trade. They might be amateurs or even professionals in another field of knowledge but why choose an actor to advise on anything when there are experts whose knowledge is specific to the subject.

Some of us worship fame to the extent that a famous person becomes an instant life-style guru on anything and everything, even when what they are saying is bullshit.

Og

Experts from the best universities totally fucked up the worlds economy, so explain to me how a plumber helper from Ohio is unqualified to report the news? The news isnt brain surgery or rocket science. Most reporters are simple news readers.

... and the gambit worked: not only did they get you to pay attention— they got you to call it to the attention of others and they got you to burn the coal needed to produce the electrons you used to start a thread thus contributing to the alleged ( but unproved ) theory of anthropogenic global warming.

Different, Og. Not a big difference, but different. The actor has played a role and made us think that they are someone important and wonderful--we love their acting--or their beautiful features at least. Their charisma has made us feel that they might be a leader we should listen to.

But Joe...um...he hasn't any of that. If McCain had picked some other person from some other YouTube video than Joe would still be a nobody. It wasn't *his* talent or looks or even willingness to ask Obama a question (lots of folks willing to do that) which got him his fame. This was a roll of the dice that put him in the spotlight. Nothing more.

Fair enough. And not. I don't know that it's a waste to discuss the whys of what people do and why they do it. And certainly these people have made us wonder why. Which may have been their aim--or they may have honestly felt Joe had a point to make in Gaza. That's what I'm wondering about.

Actually I believe the best term for this is 'wingnut welfare'.

It's a sort of a thank you note. ;)

What's the best way to dispose of an embarrassment?

Perhaps they're hoping he'll stand too close to a stray bomb.

I'm afraid part of the definition of an embarrassment is that they tend to be bomb and bulletproof. Alas

With my tongue firmly in my cheek

Like everyone else on this site I'm jealous of Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher who isn't a plumber, a taxpayer, employed, or otherwise a cardcarrying republican. I wish I'd been chosen to represent the loudmouth, racist, intellectually challenged minority that Sam the BullThrower represents. The radio republicans who have no ideas outside of the sound bites that Rush Limbaugh feeds thier closed minds.

Removing my tongue and speaking to my human beings:
I've never been more proud to be an American. Barak Hussein Obama's election to the presidency of these United States of America removes all doubt that this is not the greatest social experiment in the history of man. He is a man we can be proud of as our foremost public figure and commander in chief........
