As soon as nigger/spic/kike/cunt enters into the conversation (aimed at the usual recipient of such a slur, of course) it's no longer an argument. It's a castration.

Yet, arguably, racial slurs carry far more weight. It's not the word or the label in and of itself...it's the idea that the words represent. The issues of race and inequality is still a gaping wound in the US, and the use of the words have the effect of pouring salt in that wound. If the wound was healed, the salt would have no effect.

And I think it's misleading to compare race relations in the U.S. with those in England. Despite a completely different history, if you take into consideration modern demographics alone, it makes sense why there's heightened sensitivity. Thirteen percent of the population is black, whereas the figure is less than three percent across the pond.

While I agree that n*gger versus nigger is probably more symbolic than effective, I don't think it's really my place to decide. Personally, I do find it to be a repugnant word, but as a white person, no one is ever going to try and use it against me as a weapon, and I can never fully relate to the pain that accompanies that. Were I using nigger in an argument about semantics and someone found it objectionable and asked me to stop, I absolutely would, not out of fear, but out of respect. I believe in doing what I can to take away any power of pain the word holds, but it's hardly my place to dictate to other people what it means and when it should mean something.

I'm glad mecha brought up politics, because I agree with him in that I do think a lot of the voters who describe themselves as being fearful of Obama do so because his race and background does force them to view him as an outsider, and that's terribly unfortunate. However, I do think this is an immense step forward and I'm proud for the progress our society has made. Again, if you look purely at statistics, Black Americans and minorities in general are far better represented numerically in American politics than in British parliament, and I think that's as important to look at as the reaction to a six-letter word.
