Yesterday was the best numbers you'll see from McCain in this election. It's all down hill from here. He's already started giving back his bounce.

I agree. As soon as the buzz from the selection of Palin as VP wears off, it's all down hill. Particularly if they let her open her mouth too often.

I would also like to add,choosing her was a great political move, as much as I disagree with her politics. She's the only hope McCain has.

The perennial flaw of Democrats in national elections is to underestimate the appeal Republican candidates have with voters. The country is center-right-center now, and presuming that it is looking for substantive change -- other than that change that will affect their pocketbook -- is an often repeated error. The smart move was to ignore Palin and dismiss her as a party-unity drone designed to get some Hillary votes. But the zealots had to turn her into a star. Not that great an idea.

Johnson beat the shit out of Goldwater with a single word: "Extremist." After that, they just ran some scare ads on TV and nobody paid any attention to the man. Had they gone to Arizona and sniffed out every nasty detail of his private life, try to convince people that he was Satan, that he fucked little boys, ate afterbirth for breakfast, etc., the election might have been contested. When you want something to go away, ignore it.

She also appeals to the radical right, who is paying attention to her politics. Picking her was a gamble rooted firmly in the ignorance of the American public, and it will pay off. It may not give McCain the election, but it's as much of a boost as he is going to get.
