Property Taxes..what should you get in return?

I pay my taxes and I find that I don't get half of what my friends pay in other cities for just about the same amount paid in taxes. For instance I have to pay for trash removal, I also have to coordinate a curb side pick up for anything that will not fit in the bin, however their city has a dump and weekly curb side pick-ups. There are a few other services also.

I understand that the City has to pay for standard services and upkeep, but I wonder what makes two similar cities that collect the same amount of tax revenue differ greatly in services provided.

I was just wondering what services people believe they should receive in return for paying property taxes.

It depends where you live. Most property taxes pay for local services. Around here, half go for schools. Other signficant proportions go to police, fire, parks & rec, ummm some other stuff I'm sure.

For one thing you can't compare cities. Each one is different and has different needs and different methods of getting things done.
Another thing is that each city will divide up the revenue in different ways. Some will put more towards schools while another might put more towards the police/fire.

Let me tell you some of the perks of living back in the woods. I have five acres with a house, shop and large shed. I get no services and don't want any. I get a volunteer fire dept. My property tax was $406.00 last year. My car insurance runs a dollar a day for Two vehicles. (Nationwide)
