The societal progression was incremental. It all started with equal rights for women and equal pay for equal work. Fine, but it was soon noted that men had the riskier jobs and those jobs paid more. Sooooo, along comes the notion that women are the equal of men and any job a man can do, so can a woman (Patsy Schroeder was one of the leads on this one). Women sued to get those jobs and that lead to the reduction of physical standards. Once that was achieved then it became fashionable to push the notion that women were the equal of men in ALL respects.
