Archived Notification Feed

I almost posted here about this yesterday but decided to hold off.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I guess they revamped something in the background.

J4S
There was a announcement contemporaneous with the change.

I noticed quite a few bugs so far:
1) No notice of a new comments
2) Follower added but the count does not change
3) Favorite added but the count does not change
4) If i go to my story, it says it has 1 view but the home page says 1.6k
I am not sure if we can trust the numbers anymore ......

I think they're struggling to run the site at the moment.

Something has fallen over since mid August and Manu has not managed to fix it, if anything it's got more broken.

1) is a new problem
2) has always happened occasionally. The most recent time I tried to track it down, it appeared that the new follower unfollowed me instantly. Maybe it was an mis-click. I have also seeni it takes few hours for the number to change.
3) Favorites are reported for adding to lists as well. This has been a misnomer in the feed since before I started here (but apparently not that before, from what people have said)
4) The home page has a fairly accurate count. The other lists have outdated numbers by up to about a day.

The site has LOTS of problems right now. And always had some. Let's not exaggerate what is going wrong now.

When I'm reading on a touch screen, I sometimes fat finger the unfollow button and then immediately re-hit the follow button. So that might be happening with some of them too.

I am not saying these are new issues.
I am saying that I just noticed them. I did not really pay attention before.

This is a real problem they are creating now with the whole series of issues. People start looking more critically, expecting to find problems. I think it may take them a while to undo the damage the last 6 weeks or so have done to the site's reputation, which was already not one of great reliability.

Which makes this week's change more puzzling. The stated reason for change seems like it's much less important than the story processing issues, so why did they do it?

What problem did this change solve?
In his message, Manu talks about slowness. Presumably the giant backlog of announcements was very slow to process. This would increase load and slow response.

I made that up, but doesn't it sound plausible?

In fact, the new Activity page is slower (for me) than the old one, but I'm sure Manu is working on it.

What's the "other" refresh?

Go down to the bottom right of the Control Panel page, scroll to the bottom of the language list, click on "other", then click on the link in the second paragraph. That brings up the latest activity.

I suspect it's a glitch within the glitch, but at least it gets back to the latest activity list.

That's hilarious.

Didn't do anything for me. On investigating, that's because my new Notifications went directly to the Archived feed, including a couple from 4 hours ago.

Thanks.

Ithink this happened for two reasons. I do not think the pending hell issue is fundamentally technical. I think the entire process still is overly dependent on Laurel's abilities and for some reason (that I will not speculate on publicly), her productivity dropped for about 6 weeks.

Manu wanted to do something to look like the site was still on top of things (lots of problems with that), he tried to rush through a fix he had been thinking about. Rushing structural changes to production is almost never a good idea, which I suspect he is very aware of at this very moment.
