The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

Could that be a problem? Bec wakes up feeling like she needs to go, but occasionally nothing happens. She'd love to sleep through the night.

No, although C is griping about strong admonishments from a couple of docs to drink more fluids for dehydration-related issues, including one that put her in the ER. She says - rightfully - they cause her to have to pee in the middle of the night. That goes (pun!) fine; it's the difficulty resuming sleep that's the issue. I told her tonight that she needs to get serious and see our GP about it.

I very, very rarely get more than 2 or 3 hours at a time. Maximum is about 6. I may be awake anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours before I fall off again.

Once every couple of years, I'll get a mega sleep where I'm out most of 24 hours. Wake up, stumble to go and grab a snack and I'm out again. One year I think I did that for close to three days.

You work up an order with enough items to make the $35 free shipping.

They send it out over several days in 5 or 6 packages.

How is that saving anyone on packaging or shipping?

Shipments happen anyway, be it the massive container ships or just your friendly neighborhood courier making a delivery in your area. The logistics of scale make the cost of extra packages negligible.

And before you ask: yes, this means regular "shipping costs" are also smoke and mirrors. The minimum amount eligible free shipping is basically a ploy to get you to spend more.

For me, It's a matter of managing intake. I hydrate in the morning and maintain it through the day, and I don't drink anything after dinner. I'm usually up once during the night. If it's more than once, then it's because I'm a light sleeper.

Maybe once a year I have to get up in the middle of the night to tinkle. I do all my hydrating in the morning and early afternoon and wean off the fluids after dinner.

The plants and weeds are starting to show the effects of the long period of no rain that looks to extend another week or so.

I've got a fresh pot of coffee going and the teapot is hot. Just a reminder that the Jameson is in the cupboard next to the 'fridge. There are donuts and danish on the counter. I'm going to make an apple crisp today and I'll bring it in tomorrow.

I'll be over in the corner working on my new story. Tomorrow, I'll start the final editing on my 2025 Crime and Punishment Story event entry so I can get it entered on the 8th.

So my story went up today, although I was hoping Laurel would hold it for the start of the event. Anyway, The Great Cupcake Caper is available. Thanks Chef Kane, for your comment.

It was another cool morning -- in the 40's when I got up. It's still August people. But at least it will be sunny today. I haven't even really tried to write this weekend yet. But @RedLantern did get me started watching Brandon Sanderson's lectures for his writing class as BYU. I never took an English class in college, let alone anything about writing fiction, so this has been interesting to me. Some of it seems obvious to me and some of it I have been exposed to as it applies to movies, but much of it gets the "Oh, that makes sense" reaction from me.

On the writing side, I am working on understanding how my two lovers can reconcile their new life together, so I think I can finish that one. Watching the Sanderson lectures makes me want to focus more on some more novels. Decisions for me upcoming.

If you included the CRIME AND PUNISHMENT 2025 text in the notes to admin, then it should have been withheld. The event rules technically state "start posting on Sep 8," but it's always been possible to submit your entry sooner as long as you followed the instructions. In this case, it should've been delayed until Sep 22.

Oh well, at least you got a head start to work on your Halloween story :)

I thought I did that, but I guess I screwed that up this time. It was my expectation that she would hold it as she did for Geek Pride event. Not the end of the world.

Different events work differently. See the author-organized event list. Stories for Geek Pride all go live on the same date. Stories for Crime and Punishment go live when they're submitted.

There was a time before author-organized events. I'm not sure, but Geek Pride may have been the first. I've always had a problem with events where stories may be concentrated in one category and go live at the same time. Stories already on the hub when the event goes live get flushed. I'd be pissed if I had a story on a low-traffic hub for one day, and some author-organized event flushed it.

I've never participated in the flush-the-other-authors events.

Edit: On further thought, blackrandi's invitation-only events pre-date other author-organized events.

I guess the Lobos made a game of it against Michigan. They outscored the Wolverines in the 2nd and 3rd quarters 17-13. Unfortunately, they were outscored in the 1st and 4th quarters 0-21.

On the bright side, they didn't fold in the last quarter. Michigan scored just one touchdown.

The wording in the C&P announcement is a bit vague; they way I understand it is that the stories are all supposed to go live on the same date (Sep 22), just like for Geek Pride.

But even if it's publish-as-you-go, the submission window opens in a week from now, so the iwatchus's story shouldn't have gone up until at least then.

If the list doesn't say they go live at the same time, then they don't.

The opening of the submission window isn't a hard-and-fast rule. Even in the special contests you can submit ahead of the opening date. In the case of the special contests, Laurel holds the stories until the opening date, but there's not much reason to do that for the author-organized events. The actual event is just the publication of the event page, and that happens at the end.

It's another beautiful sunny morning. Cool but expected to get warm later on. Still no rain in the forecast so I may have to start watering. I'm still off the Meloxicam but not enjoying the overall aches. I've made an appointment with my doctor to discuss if the side effects of long term usage outweighs being pain-free.

I've got a fresh pot of coffee going and the teapot is hot. I found a nice batch of 'Cortland' apples and made an apple crisp. I'm quite pleased with how it came out and it is on the counter along with some donuts. I prefer using 'Arkansas Black' apples but they are coming in so late this year I didn't want to wait for them.

I'll be over in the corner editing my story to submit tomorrow for the 20205 Crime and Punishment Story Event. So far, I'm pleased with how few edits I've needed to make on it.

This is very weird for me and I have to speak in very general terms.

Through extreme frugality (cutting out most but not all wants), savings plans, collecting whatever bank and credit card bonuses and promos I can find, participating in any discount and benefits programs I'm eligible for and pushing money into high yield savings accounts, my 'liquid cash' will have increased almost 5 times over 4 years.

I have more 'cash on hand' now than at any point in the decades I worked.

That said, it's still a small fraction of what many of you have.

That sounds like success to me. :)

Good morning folks. My last two nights have probably been my best two nights of sleep in a while. Even having got to bed with a headache last night. It might be that school has started now; I am always very stressed about getting each class off to a good start. Every class has a unique mixture of students and works differently. I have had some frustrating ones, but never a truly bad group. My SO did at our previous institution.

But it might also be from spending the weekend watching the Sanderson lectures instead of trying to corral my bickering lovers in my WIP. I think they may have been screaming at each other in my subconscious all night.

Anyway, it looks like a beautiful day today, Week two of the semester starts today. 120 more class meetings to teach (assuming I don't cancel any) including in class exams and I am fully retired. I hope everyone else has a good day. And for the Americans, I hope you all enjoyed our long weekend. Welcome back to the work week.

Unfortunately, last night was a very restless night with dreams of saying goodbye to everyone waking me up several times. Now, don't worry, I'm not going to do anything stupid, but I have left many people behind over the seven decades I've lived and I occasionally think about them and wonder what happened to them. See my recent poem "Choices"

Anyway, it's another beautiful sunny morning, cool but warming up into the 80s later today. I'm going to try to get out and do some weeding and trimming depending on how badly my body hurts today.

There's a fresh pot of coffee brewing and the teapot is hot. There are donuts and cookies on the counter. I see that the apple crisp was a big success so I'll try to make another one soon.

I'll be over in the corner editing my story in preparation to submitting it. Feel free to stop by and chat. I'll welcome the distraction ...
