Intelligent people know that it is called gender dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria has many causes and among those causes are treatable mental conditions. Up until the fad of 'acceptance' started in the past twenty years these folks would get treatment for their problems and their symptoms such as self loathing manifesting as hating their male/female identity would also be resolved.

Now that these people are 'accepted' and therapists refuse to treat them for suicidal ideations if such treatment would also affect their male/female identity the suicide rate for them has gone up precipitously.

An anecdotal indicator of the failure of the mental health community to treat these people is seen in the uptick of mass shooters who are also 'trans'. I am not saying that their 'trans' issue is causing the mass shootings, not at all. I am saying that there exists now a trend in the mental heath community to decline to treat these people and to go along with the popular trend and just say that they're fine the way they are.

The assumption that just because someone claims to be trans means they are in perfect mental health is a failure of the mental health community to stand up against a popular trend for the best interests of their individual patients.

And in this I am saying that not every 'trans' identifying person needs to be transitioned. A good many of them are violently lashing out because transitioning them did not address their underlying mental problems.

A lot of people can stop hormone therapy and go back to their previous selves. Their voice may be changed but that is about it. People who use hormones for years are pretty sure about their transition and are not changing their minds.

Most youth gender therapy involves over a year of just talking to a therapist and all with the parent's consent before anything like hormones are started. It isn't just willy nilly.

Schools are not performing gender reassignment behind the parent's backs.

I am all about freedom of expression. We. Are. Individuals. [insert a tulip here.]

But the parents bear responsibility and not everyone is a good parent. Not every parent shares the same views as another parent. We disagree based on personal perspective because reasons. Kids, quite simply, are at the mercy of what their parents think and want. This is SO complex. I otherwise agree with your sentiment.

There’s a whole gauntlet of professionals that must be convinced that what they’re doing medically / surgically FIRST DOES NO HARM (and those professionals are VERY cautious when dealing with these types of situations).

For the record, gender dysphoria affects about a small fraction of America, it's not some epidemic “destroying America.” Meanwhile, vaccine refusal is way more dangerous and widespread.
