A judge in Wisconsin has been arrested by US federal authorities after allegedly trying to help an undocumented immigrant who appeared in her court avoid arrest.
The US Marshalls Service told the BBC's US partner CBS News that officers took Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan into custody on Friday morning.
In a post on X, which was deleted minutes later, FBI Director Kash Patel alleged that Dugan allowed Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a Mexican national facing three misdemeanour counts of battery stemming from a fight, to escape from her courtroom.
Flores-Ruiz was later arrested and appeared in the Milwaukee court for a scheduled hearing on 18 April.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that officers from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were also in the courtroom that day, and that Dugan directed Flores-Ruiz and his lawyer to a side door leading out of the courtroom.

The felon-in-chief was given the opportunity to attend by appointment for all his arrests and trials, despite making speeches on the courtroom steps accusing the judge, prosecutors, their families, witnesses, bailiffs, office cleaners and car park attendants of corruption. This is a dumb take. It's unlawful, so why should it not be criminal? One of the things you look at under international law to see if a political entity qualifies as a nation is whether they control their borders. Complete freedom of movement across borders is a Libertarian boondoggle that advantages capital at the expense of workers.

Also, as someone who now regularly appears before judges, many of them have zero fucks to give about 'the law" and say everything can be couched in equity. There's a lot of talk about how the administration is lawless and it absolutely is, but there are members of the judiciary who are equally lawless. A lot of judges, particularly on the state level, think they are fucking gods. We appear in front of judges in Philly Municipal court who will not evict someone no matter how late they are on their rent and no matter how menacing they've been to other tenants. That's fucked up. Judges that hide illegal immigrants should suffer the consequences. Honestly, the judiciary is not the magical cure to tyranny everyone wants it to be. Judges are as capable (in fact often more capable) of replacing the rule of law with their own judgment as any other governmental entity. Sure you can appeal them. That process can take literal years and be more expensive to your client than just swallowing their bullshit and they know it.
