They Brought Guns to a Pokemon fight

Why it is good to follow forum rules-

These two lost souls attracted the attention of a security team, the Boston Police, and the Feds.

They could be having fun chasing Pikachu at the 2016 Ohio GOP conference.
Instead, they due to appear in front of a judge in Boston.

There were video clips of the Boston Pokemon conference on local television, that week.
It was charming to see all the children, and all of the costumes.
It was heart warming, to know children from all over the world were attending the events in Boston.

I was amazed that Pokemon was still so popular, and that the prizes were large amounts of money. It did not occur to me that someone would attempt an attack on Pokemon players.I thought of Sandy Hook as an aberration, and did not think that would ever happen, again.

They made online threats before driving 25 hours to Boston to attend the Pokemon event in Boston last August. Prosecutors say they had an AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and nearly 300 rounds of ammunition in their car. They were arrested while trying to register for the event.

They are set to appear Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court, in a case that began after authorities said they made online threats against the Pokemon World Championship at the Hynes Convention Center.

"...authorities said they found an AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge Remington shotgun, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a hunting knife in the 2002 Chevrolet Prizm the men had driven to Boston. Both face guns and ammunition charges."

Hearing in Pokemon Championships Threat Case Put Off

Jul 18, 2016

Kevin Norton, of Ames, and James Stumbo, of Boone, were expected to appear in Suffolk Superior Court Monday. The hearing was postponed until Thursday after lawyers and a prosecutor had several sidebar discussions with the judge.

Stumbo's mother and brother traveled from Iowa to Boston to attend the hearing but declined to speak with reporters. The judge allowed them to speak to Stumbo briefly as he was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Boston Municipal Court, Boston police Detective James Simpson

Simpson said Norton posted a threatening remark after an online moderator banned him from a forum for ridiculing another participant.

"Oh okay that's fine then I will just shoot him on Friday thanks," the comment said, referring to a man from Missouri who was scheduled to attend the Pokemon conference, Simpson said.

Boston Municipal Court Judge Thomas C. Horgan denied 18-year-old Kevin Norton and 27-year-old James Stumbo bail after they appeared at a dangerousness hearing on Tuesday. The judge ordered that the Iowa men be held without bail for the next 120 days after they allegedly threatened violence at the Pokémon World Championships last month.

The suspects were barred from entering the event on August 20. Boston police executed a search warrant on the suspects' vehicle on August 21, finding and recovering the weapons. The BPD then collaborated with the police in the nearby town of Saugus to arrest the two suspects at a hotel in that town.

Under Iowa law, it would be legal for residents to obtain an AR-15 rifle or a 12-gauge shotgun, assuming neither gun was modified or “sawed off,” said Ross Loder, a bureau chief for the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Iowa does require a permit to acquire pistols and handguns, he said.

The two men had allegedly threatened specific individuals and discussed mass shootings in online chat rooms.

One alleged post by one of the two Iowa suspects said, “My AR15 says you lose."

Before his arrest, according to prosecutors, Norton, 18, was not allowed access to a chat room from which he was banned for bullying, and allegedly stated, “Oh, ok, that’s fine then I will just shoot him on Friday thanks.”

18-year-old Kevin Norton and 27-year-old James Stumbo had a 12-gauge shotgun, an AR-15, hundreds of rounds of ammo and a hunting knife in their vehicle.

Word of the post got to security at the Hynes Convention Center and they reported to Boston Police. When Norton and Stumbo tried to get in to the event Thursday, they were stopped.

Men who made Pokemon threats referenced marathon bombings, police say

On a public Facebook page called “Mayhem Pokemon Crew,” Stumbo posted a photo of a white sedan, with two military-style weapons crossed over the trunk.

At the convention center on Sunday, security guards and police officers lined the entrances. Bags were being inspected at random inside the arena.

From his social media posts, Stumbo appears to have been a successful player.

In a recent Facebook post, for example, he boasted that he planned to spend his earnings from this year’s national Pokemon tournament on “guns and strippers.”

“Boys an girls this is going to be a guns and stripper weekend!!!” he wrote on July 30 above a photo of an e-mail announcing that his $1,000 Pokemon check was in the mail.

One of the commenters on the Facebook post was none other than Kevin Norton.

“But imagine [what] would she do for $1,000,” Norton said, referring to a stripper. “I approve of pokemans [sic] funding strip clubs.”

According to his Facebook profile, Norton is a high school student in Ames, Iowa, about 36 miles away from Stumbo’s hometown of Des Moines.

Norton told police where their car was parked and that it had weapons inside. Norton said the shotgun was his but the AR-15 was Stumbo’s. Neither man produced a permit to carry firearms.”

1,000 children, teens, young adults all earned invitations.
International conference.

This year was different from other years.

"World Championships, police were everywhere, on each floor of the convention center and in all of the major conference rooms. The roughly 3,000 attendees were screened and bags were checked, dogs patrolled every area. At the time, that seemed like a heavy response, but that’s because we were kept totally in the dark about any threats."
