Regarding Ukraine:

Hegseth told his counterparts gathered in the Belgian capital that Zelenskyy had no chance of achieving his goal of kicking Russian forces out of Crimea and the east of the country and returning Ukraine to its pre-2014 borders.

The Art of The Deal clearly says to stake out the most outlandish "out there" position at your very first encounter This enables you to be able to "reluctantly" cede positions you never had a snowball's chance in hell of getting in the first place.

You will appear "magnanimous" and "gracious" and most importantly "a brilliant negotiator".

Hegseth had all the finesse of a ham sandwich.

1. "Ukraine must realize they MUST cede conquered territory! Russia has fought long and hard in this war and cannot be expected to end this conflict empty-handed!"
2. "The US and Russia alone will decide the fate of Ukraine. Ukranian and NATO input will not be needed or accepted!"
3. "The US will no longer abide by Rule 3 of NATO (an attack on one country is considered an attack on all of our countries). Going forward everything is transactional and negotiable".

Number three above seriously pissed off virtually everyone in Europe (which MAGAt shitscum here regard as a "good thing") He basically said "NATO is dead, thanks for playing". Hegseth does not have the authority or credibility to make such a claim. Everyone present recognized at that moment that Hegseth was not to be taken seriously.

Side Note: senior American military leaders figured out the lack of seriousness in Hegseth earlier in the week when they asked about whether there would be any major change in military policy towards China and Hegseth blurted out (soberly?) that the "REAL enemy they should be focusing on is MEXICO!" Military leaders expect serious responses to their questions, not campaign fluff.
