He is not a transformative figure like FDR, or even like Obama. Trump's election constitutes no paradigm-breaker, no game-changer, no new party system in American politics. He will leave no important traces when he passes, and his RW populist-nationalist movement will revert to the same ridiculous-crank status the Tea Party held before him.

He takes office with a divided party that barely controls Congress and approval ratings in the basement. He can break a lot of stuff over the next few months, but he won't be able to pass any legislation.

And yet ... he seems pretty important. After all, if he wasn't important, nobody would be talking about him.
He certainly does not represent any "New World Order" or "Civilizational Fork in the Road."
He's the president. Not all presidents are equally important. Ford was not important, but if the Lit PB had existed during his administration, there would have been Ford-related threads every day.

Of course -- at least, any time after FDR. But not all presidents are equally important. FDR was a transformative figure -- he changed the lineup of American politics for decades after him -- he ushered in a new party system. Trump won't do any of that.President of the United States is the most important person on earth. No matter who.

Donald Trump may destroy the Republican Party. It's hard to see how they come back from this.
