RIP Jimmy Carter

Jay Nordlinger wrote in “Carterpalooza,” “No one quite realizes just how passionately anti-Israel Carter is. William Safire has reported that Cyrus Vance acknowledged that, if he had had a second term, Carter would have sold Israel down the river. In the 1990s, Carter became quite close to Yasser Arafat. After the Gulf War, Saudi Arabia was mad at Arafat, because the PLO chief had sided with Saddam Hussein. So Arafat asked Carter to fly to Riyadh to smooth things over with the princes and restore Saudi funding to him — which Carter did…In The Unfinished Presidency, [Douglas] Brinkley writes, ‘There was no world leader Jimmy Carter was more eager to know than Yasir Arafat.’”
True, Carter believed in a Palestinian homeland, just as he believed in a homeland for the Jews.

The problem has always been the failure of each side to acknowledge the other’s right to exist in peace.

Anyone who tries to tar Jimmy Carter on the topic is a fool.

I didn't really know much about Carter, being just a clueless Brit teenager when he served his presidential term. All I really got was that he was the peanut guy. By the time Reagan got in I was a bit wised up politically and aware things had changed.

But everything I know about what he did since suggests to me he was a very genuine, kind human driven by his faith to do the most good in the world he could. Although I'm a devout agnostic, I can admire the sense of mission and duty that a genuine Christian like Carter had, and be appalled at the cynical way a certain successor uses the Bible and its followers as an emotive electoral trick while not even remotely following its message or performing its works.

Interesting. You admit that your media doesn't tell you everything and that what you learn post-event changes your outlook.

Yet here you are spouting the media line about Trump without recognizing the hypocrisy that your media still isn't telling you everything, let alone anything close to the truth.

That tells me that you're not "wise politically." You're still the clueless nutball you've always been.

You have to be the most clueless moron on this forum. Bar none.
Your comment is patently disrespectful of @HisArpy, who labors here day in and day out as the walking, talking embodiment of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Edit: Yes, I know HisArpy can at least spell his college degree correctly, but "law" is much easier to spell than "mathmatics" (sic), and besides, AJ has only made that error four times in 20+ years of posting.

Or, perhaps, you truly are the embodiment of clueless and aren't aware enough to understand even that much about yourself.

Rob’s not clueless.

He just uses 500 words to show how wrong he is, because he thinks he’s drole.

Whereas you can usually do it in less than 50 and think you’re informed.

Lol

Right Wing assholes crawling all over each other to make sure to tell everyone how horrible of a President he was....lol

One of the wittiest comments a butthurt Dunning-Kruger afficionado will offer as a reply is the classic third grade retort "Nuh Uh, YOU are".

Sometimes it is difficult to discern which is weaker: Derpy's spine or his intellect.

No, I've read the whole doorstopper book, Perlstein's Reaganland, which covers the whole period of Carter's presidency in quite incredible depth, and there's nothing in it about Washington insiders being against him.

One interesting thing from that book: The hostage crisis was planned by nobody, it just kinda . . . happened. There were several factions active in Tehran -- when one of them suddenly found itself in possession of the American embassy, Khomeini just had to deal with that. As Perlstein describes it, it was not even a matter of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing -- the fingers were not in communication.
What part of him being PRIMARIED can you NOT get through your thick head? Do even know what it means? I lived through it and remember it clearly. If your above mentioned book didn’t mention it, then it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on.

Maybe you should Read the book mentioned in this interview.

Here’s a little hint. Reading one book is good. Reading several books is better😉

It begs the question what prism you view good/bad presidencies through I guess. In modern times, a president is viewed by whether he gets reelected or not. You can call us assholes all day, but it doesn’t change the fact the country didn’t agree with you.

The story is that an ex President, who had a fairly comprehensive post Presidency career, died. He even had an extensive pre-Presidency career.

My point is where the focus is and why. Overall, there were worst and better Presidents imo. You're assholes because that not only is your lead......you want to ensure that it's the most important part.

First president I remember, unfortunately. I'm just old enough to have seen what my parents went through with the gas shortage, inflation and of course the Iran hostage crisis.

Truly heartbreaking.
Which one of these 3 traumatizing events caused the domestic violence in your home that led to your parents divorcing?

Really? Really Jimmy? You were gonna be on my celebrity death list for next year. You an Betty White last time bitching out before Trump takes office? Bad form. Bad form.

Jokes aside he made it to 100. He was a great man and will be missed but if you make it past 90 I'm only so sad when you die.
I have mixed feelings on the death of former US President James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr., basically because his Presidency was a JOKE.

Foreign Policy FUCK-Ups:
*Threw Taiwan under the bus and kissing China's asses. Noticed that Taiwanese President Ching Lai-te and the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs have NOT issued any statements ever and likely won't ever will. Guessing they're secretly celebrating Carter's death.

*The Pahlavi family of Iran: threw them under the bus and refused to allow the Shah and his family to remain in the United States and according to one story, Carter was triggered by Kissinger's phone call and said "FUCK THE SHAH".

*Almost destroyed the ROKUS Alliance and nearly torpedoed the US/Philippine Alliance as well.

The USA generally doesn’t offer asylum to overthrown dictators.

That said, the Crown Prince/ next Shah in Waiting and the rest of the family lives quietly in the USA

He’s fond of Boyd Coddington customs.

In August 1979, Brooks Jackson, a reporter for The Associated Press, broke the news that a “killer rabbit” had attacked President Jimmy Carter.
It was a “throwaway story,” he said, but one that took on a life of its own and, in a strange way, became emblematic of Mr. Carter’s problems at home and abroad.
According to the story told by White House staff members, Mr. Carter had been fishing on a pond near his home in Plains, Ga., in April 1979, when he spotted an animal swimming toward his boat.
That animal, it turned out, was a rabbit — an enraged swamp rabbit, according to the White House press secretary, Jody Powell — that was “making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth,” and was intent on climbing into the president’s boat.
But Mr. Carter, the commander in chief, repelled the attack. As confirmed by Mr. Carter himself in subsequent interviews, he dipped a paddle into the water and splashed the oncoming rabbit, driving it to the opposite end of the pond.
The tale did not come to light until months later, when the story was leaked to Mr. Jackson. The Washington Post put the A.P. story on the front page on Aug. 30, 1979, under the headline: “Bunny Goes Bugs. Rabbit Attacks President.” It was accompanied by a cartoon showing a large bucktoothed rabbit emerging from the water like a shark. “Paws,” read the caption.

In honor of Jimmy Carter, all US flags will be flown at half mast thought the period of the rapist's inauguration.
I honestly do not think the incoming president will honor that law at his inauguration. Bad optics and future historians might mistake the photo as a sign that America knew it was dying as a democracy.

Of course, he surprised me yesterday by having a speechwriter pen a rather nice memorial to President Carter. There wasn't a single reference to himself or his past or upcoming glories. That was a pleasant change, especially after his cringy "Christmas greeting" shitpost.

I don't think Melania will move back into the White House with him, do you?

They had separate bedrooms during the first regime (she moved in, what, 18 months into his term? "Barron's education" and all that codswallop?). I think she'll live in Manhattan and Mar-a-lago.

In Defense of Speaking Ill of Jimmy Carter

I have a piece on the main site that is a harsh critique of Jimmy Carter’s legacy. Some readers objected to posting it so soon after his death, citing the old maxim “don’t speak ill of the dead.” While I think that expression can often be a good rule of thumb, I don’t think it applies in every case, particularly not here.
Carter wasn’t some random public figure, he served as president of the United States and influenced world affairs for decades after leaving office. He didn’t die in a shocking or sudden manner (like an assassination or terrible car accident in his 50s) – he died at 100, after spending nearly two years in hospice.
Plenty of other people will give Carter his due. His memorial services will stretch for eight days, with events in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. He will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda and have a funeral at the National Cathedral where he will be eulogized by the sitting president and surrounded by former presidents as well as dignitaries from around the world.
In the meantime, the corporate media is treating us to nonstop fawning coverage of Carter that whitewashes his true record. It’s unclear to me why I should feel the need to wait days, or weeks, to deliver an accurate assessment of his disastrous legacy that corrects this prevailing narrative.
I have always striven to write the truth, and there is no way I could have written about Carter without reminding people, in detail, that he was a terrible president and an even worse former president.
