Work in Progress

Actually, I thought it sounded like you could sell some of them, as long as they're tagged as mature content. It's hard to draw a line between "sexual activity" and "an extreme or explicit version of sexual content." It makes me wonder whether the policy is basically a fig leaf. If you Google "erotic art on Etsy" and check the image results, it demonstrates that in practice, pretty much anything goes.
I've not gone looking for the Etsy policies, but as you say, much of the art content published there (including photography) is certainly my definition of erotica - generally speaking explicit but not crass, thus navigating the dividing line between "erotica" and "porn" - whatever that is (it's subtle but I recognise it when I see it :)). I agree, the key is to be sensible with it, and if it's obviously adult or mature content, label it as such.

For me, it's a question of the effort needed to get very high quality photographs of the artwork, which is a whole 'nother skill.

Are the ones you're selling large? If they're not as large as the ones on your walls, a large flat-bed scanner at a copy shop might be the way to go. I dunno. Does that look artsy enough? If you do have to photograph them, it might not be necessary to get really high resolution, since it's going to be reduced to what fits on the screen. You might want to check the size limits on what you can upload, too.

The thing about Etsy is the ability to sell gyclee prints which can be any size from little miniatures (A5) up to original size reproductions - most of my originals are A1 or A2. But I'm not consistently good enough and don't yet have a stable style so I'm not at the quality level to warrant the effort. I spend more time writing than drawing, and find myself time limited for that. It sits in the back of mind, though, as does illustrated written erotica.

Speaking of formats, scanning and use for illustrations. Here's as much as 'work in progress' as I have - directly from the scanner this morning. Sorry, not much eroticism to be on display.

attachment.php

Some first sketches to think about the mood and proportions, and most probably it will undergo one two more changes till I carry on to a slightly larger format. Those samples were done on memo notes (9x9 cm - may the metric system live long and wide ;) ), HB pencil to already try shades, I slowly work myself into.

I do like that quadratic format especially for illustrated poems since it goes well with the short lines of the poem that don't stretch all over the page, while a the standard 4by3-portrait format would just dominate the poem. On the other hand for line filling text I started to use a 'panorama' format, half A4 or A5 by length in a way it will complement the story not dominate it.

By experience, illustrated stories and poems receive much more attention, even though not more feedback...Guess, people expect pretty explicit pictures to accompany our written smut ;) But I would presage what you both, THROBBS and electricblue66, presented here, added with a few well done stanzas or a naughty bit of erotica would sky-rocket to the regarding Top Lists.

My experience with the cheap all-in-one-printer, I own, is pretty mixed as it produces scans with a brightness gradient. The A4 drawing of 'Dragons: All eyes on you' I had to piece together from two scans. So, my advice, if you want to go and use a copy shop large format device let them scan a grey tone paper of desired format and check if it shows such a gradient. Getting rid of that is annoying, tedious work you probably don't have time for.

Good concepts. (a bit awkward when scanned immediately adjacent :) 1&2 together gives illusion of strange arm proportions. The hands with potted plant is my favorite.

Also, good thoughts about the visuals of text with illustration. Many folk tend to overlook the aesthetics of typography — the whole presentation, the gestalt.

I haven't done any poetry for many many years. I did have a couple illustrated stories posted, quite some time ago. Much like my erotic illustrations here, I do not tend to do the "polishing", so the I tend to be pretty light on editing, and I am just a fair writer.

For one or two illustrated poems of mine I actually do have another presentation in my head than Lit is available to show. But well, I don't think anyone would want an ebook with just a few pages of lousy poetry.

I really love those of your artworks that are set in a scene/background, like the cadillac one or the 'licking ocean'. Viewing those there's a story shaping in my imagination...and looking on the comments in your 'up-front' thread others tend to have such images in their heads too ;)

btw, looking for an editor? :) That's an art I love too...

Well, you might dangle it out there and see if you get some bites.

Thanks. I tend to be too lazy (or uninspired) to really develop those. I often "plan" to...then... SQUIRREL!

There are a few exceptions...

Not currently. Though I should, if I try and publish written work again.

You're right, integrating illustrations into the body of a story or around a poetry anthology would go down well and I've often thought of doing exactly that. A lot of work, though, to do it well.

I've got the written equivalent here, but you have to imagine the illustrations...

I keep thinking I should revise this story with illustrations, as the words are already there.

heh heh. yep, you have created a monster!

Not this one, of course, 'cuz I won't even blame mom & dad for that!

Worked on a new one today.
From an ABC thread and inspired by Talikat's V is for Vampire post.
Here's my post

And the stages it has gone through (so far). I hope to grab some softer pencils later, to "punch it up" a bit.
rough / some more details / & more "fleshing out" and a bit of simple photoshop adjustments, without hooking up the tablet.

Long lives the dead thread

A piece for a non-erotic illustrated one. My first attempt on 'mixed media'.

Sketch where to place what

defining patience?
waiting patients!
petals witnessing,
seconds withering.

A bit of hospital melancholy to start from (to progress to a more cheerful end). The idea was to use very reduced colors, stressing shadows and some small details in the background.

Bits and pieces

The ingredients: some single photographed objects, pencil sketches roughly 'cut' out from scans, shadows and gradients done with inkscape.

...and done

The final: increased the contrasts with GIMP

Similar here. Only one nude hanging in the house, in the bedroom. It is somewhat "sensual" and non-explicit.:)

Have you sold your work on etsy before? Do you know what their policies are regarding nudity, explicitness, "pornography"? - I'll probably go check.

*************
back!

found it:
https://www.etsy.com/legal/prohibited/?ref=list#Q7
From Etsy's
Prohibited Items Policy
7. Pornography and Mature Content
As a creative community, we tend to be fairly liberal about what we allow on Etsy, but we draw the line at pornography. Beyond that, we restrict mature content so that people who are offended by this kind of material don't have to see it. If you are selling mature content, we ask that you be respectful of differing sensibilities.

More Details:
Pornography of any sort is prohibited on Etsy, whereas mature content is restricted.

Although pornography can be difficult to define, an item generally qualifies as pornography when it contains extreme or explicit version of sexual content.

We define mature content as depictions of human genitalia, sexual activity or content, profane language, sexual wellness items, violent images (within reason; see also Violent Items), and explicit types or representations of taxidermy. Click here to read more about how to properly list and tag mature content. Not all nudity is considered mature, and examples are listed below. If you find yourself questioning whether your item is mature, then it is likely a good idea to assume that it is mature content, and you should label it as such.

When deciding whether mature content crosses over the threshold into pornography, we take into consideration the explicitness of depictions of sexual activity or content.

So, I could certainly sell my life drawings, but not most anything that I've posted here.

Chances are; if it's not sex explicitly, or say heavy BDSM, or would be chan worthy, it might be fine. Matter of fact; even though I haven't pushed the limits, if it'll fly on Instagram, chances are Etsy will be okay with it. I follow a fre artist there, everything the upload seems fine, even mr. Futa himself; Dimitri.

It's the season of silliness, boys and girls.

How to make your dream girl? Not the usual pencil or digital made one, but one with more inner values...nutritional values.
