The Last Daughter of Krypton - IC

Var-Sen, or John Smith he reminded himself, walked into the office of Smallville High and spoke to an elderly woman seated behind a desk. The woman introduced him to a student messenger, whom she said would escort him to the history class where he would be giving his lecture.

Smith carried a laptop briefcase, in which he had a Power Point presentation on the "Great Accomplishments of the Twentieth Century".

He smoothed his dark hair back as he followed the student messenger down the hallway. He was wearing a black button-up shirt, with black slacks and a black sport coat. He suddenly realized he was either very cool looking, or very Johnny Cash. He almost smiled for a second as he remembered a line from a film:

"Why you all dressed in black? You look like you're going to a funeral."

"Maybe I am."

Yeah, maybe he was. He was sure if he bored the class with his lecture that they'd stone him to death or something equally catastrophic. Perhaps banishment to the Phantom Zone? At least there, he wouldn't ever have to worry about the secrets of his origin. Although there was General Zod he'd probably have to deal with...

Kara walked down the hallway, weaving her way through the crowd of students that went this way and that, moving from their lockers to other rooms throughout the high school building. She had never really seen such a large gathering of kids her own age and became rather lost in the massive sea of people. Not only did they seem in a hurry, but their conversations ranged from parties after school to whether or not they'd go to their next class.

Hey that's my foot.
Dude, let's just skip and go home.
Death to all humans!

"How do people put up with this?" she asked herself, finally reaching her classroom, the number atop the door matching the one on her schedule. She walked inside and saw a few students sitting down. There were plenty of seats available, so Kara chose one more towards the middle of the room. After sitting down Kara checked the clock on the wall to make sure she hadn't missed anything. As a matter of fact Kara arrived fairly early, as most of the other students hadn't yet arrived.

'Good. This way I won't get yelled at.' she thought. With a huff she pursed her lips and blew a strange of golden hair away from her face.

'I wonder how my Dad made out'
she thought, glancing towards the windows. Her family was scheduled to get some new livestock today, and Kara had planned to go with her father to pick them up. Obviously she hadn't planned on being enrolled at Smallville High. She smiled at that thought.

Misty found her next class it was history and as she walked in she noticed a familiar face it was Kara. "Good we have at least one class together." She says as she sits down right next to Kara. "History is so boring but its so easy to get a good grade in it."

Misty continues to make small talk with Kara as she waits to see who else filters into the classroom. Her best friend Mindy walks in and sits down right in front of her. "Hi Mindy I'd like you to meet Kara."

Bruce sat with his head on the desk. He was tired. The daylight hours weren't for him. Time seemed to stand still untill he heard a familiar voice. He looked up to see Kara sitting down, next to a couple more girls.

Bruce debated whether to go sit by her or not. He decided against it, due to the fact that he didn't want to come on too strong, or freak her out or something. He had to remember that he was nothing like her type. She was a quiet farm girl, he was a care-free (for the most part) billionare. Didn't seem to fit, no matter how upsetting it made him.

Bruce pulled his notebook out of his bag, as a man dressed in all black walked in. The man looked as if he was going to a funeral. The picture of Johnny Cash ran through his head. Bruce noticed a hint of nervousness in his body language: the way he walked, looked at the students, and moved around in general.

Bruce let out a sigh. At least I'm not the only one who is nervous around here. he said, thinking about Kara and this man in front of him.

Bruce noticed that several kids had sat near him, making it a little uncomfortable. He thought about moving, but the only place he could really go was next Kara. But he didn't want to intrude.

Finally he gave up. Bruce picked up his bag and his notebook, and walked over to the seat next to Kara, and sat down.

Well, at least there's one familiar face Bruce said smiling at Kara.

Lex paced about the study of his fathers Smallville mansion, eying the well stocked bar in the corner. "Luthorcorp: Smallville... Thanks dad... I'm so glad you have THIS MUCH confidence in my buisness skills!" Lex said to himself as he finally strode over to the bar and poored himself a fine glass of brandy.

As he sipped it, a phone rang. Picking it up, Lex answered "Luthor residence, Lex speaking." "Mr. Luthor, your presence at the facility is urgently requested, there has been an accident, Mr. Graves has been injured."

"I am on my way." Lex said quickly, eying his glass of brandy for a moment before downing it. In mere minutes he was flying toward the new Luthorcorp facility in his cherry red ferrarri.

Randal Graves was a good friend of his, perhaps the only friend he had in this god forsaken little town at the moment, and Lex would be damned if he would see the man hurt in any way...

"Report." Lex commanded as he strode into the facility. "Mr. Luthor, it seems that Mr Graves will be alright." "Good. Now tell me what happened?" Lex asked sharply of the senior worker who had stepped up to him. "Mr. Graves insisted on being present for the experiment, sir, and inadvertently breathed in some of the meteor gas. It rendered him unconcious for several minutes, but we roused him with smelling salts.

Lex clenched his jaw. "Who allowed this?" He asked angerly. "No one allowed it Lex." Graves said as he walked up, several nervous workers still trying to tend to him as he continually shrugged them off. "I demanded it." Graves said with a sideways grin.

"Randal... You shouldn't have, for your own safetly..." Lex said in a low, chiding voice. "Oh please, Lex, this comming from you is almost laughable. You're not exactly Mr. Safety first, you know. Remember the eiffel incident?" Graves said with a dismissive laugh. "Heh, yeah, I remember... But still... You shouldn't..."

"I know, Lex, but if Luthorcorp wants my support, I need to know whats really going on around here, understand?" Graves countered, adding. "But I can see by the look in your eyes that you're not going to let up, thats the thing about you Luthors, always so single minded. If it will make you feel better, I'll let these men cart me off to the hospital, get a clean bill of health, just so there's no hard feelings, okay?"

"Good enough, I'll have your family contacted, and Graves..."

"Yeah Lex?"

"It was good to see you again."

Kyle Greystone AKA Wraith

“Another year of school. Another year of hiding what I am and hoping I keep it hidden.”
I looked into the mirror, softly glowing eyes staring back at me. Bekka said I was staying at Gram and Gramps so that I would learn how to deal with others and have a normal life. Besides, she was in a rush to complete the Stronghold project for the office of Homeland Security ( and man weren’t the Luthors pissed they lost the bidding on that one!) and did not have time to take care of her little brother. Oh well, at least in the night I could be who I was out here.
I shifted into my armored form, the low moan softly filling the room and the shadows swirling until I was standing there, a black form in the mirror looking back where a young man had been. Stepping through the shadows I shifted to the kitchen and shifted back. Yeah I could have used the stairs but whats the fun in that?
I am a teenager anyway. We are supposed to be a little reckless.
I had breakfast pretty much cooked by the time Gramps came down. Not having to sleep, I usually had the chores done and breakfast made before they woke up. Mom’s parents took me and Bekka in with no questions after the night I lost Mom & dad. They wanted to know what happened, to them and to us, but they waited until we told them. I could never repay them, so being the best I could for them is how I tried.
Gramps ruffled my hair when he walked by to get his coffee. It was habit, he’s been doing that as long as I can remember, even if he has to reach up to do it now.
“First day of school is today Kyle. Isis will be driving you in today since she has some chores in town today, but you can catch the bus home. Also, don’t forget your contacts. “
He sat down & started reading the paper as Gram came down, kissed my cheek and got her black liquid gold herself. We had breakfast and made small talk until I left to get ready. I knew they were worried about me going to school. Lately my powers had been acting stranger, Manifesting occasionally when I was real stressed out, but I would just have to control them better. I put in my blue contacts, effectively masking my lavender eyes and grabbed my oakleys. With the bright lights in Smallville High, I’d need them or I would have a splitting headache by the end of the day.
Gram dropped me off and once again I was back in the American Institution that is knows as High School. The cliques, the stress and pressure, and the joks with brains smaller than their eyes, sorta like an ostrich. Great, Mike Grandlow got held back. I was looking forward to that asshole being gone but I guess his football skills could not keep him from failing half his classes. Last year he had been my personal Hell, and I ducked in quickly to avoid the once-again senior.
Damnit!
I grabbed my schedule and made it through my first class. Mrs. Boswell knew me, so there were no questions about my glasses, but I did not recognize the name in second period History, so I had my story ready for the inevitable question. Happened at least three to four times every year, so I was a old pro at this. Even if I got called “Ray Charles” by the neandethal population of the school.
I choose a seat at the back, passing by two pretty blondes, and a guy with his head down. He looked familiar but I couldn’t quite place him. Taking my seat I leaned back and studied the class. Oh well, at least so far “Iron Arm “ Gradlow hadn’t found me yet. Of course there were five more hours to go also, and his favorite hunting ground was the cafeteria.
School sucks!

Bruce noticed someone walking in between him and Kara. He looked up to see a man walking to the back of the room. Unlike himself, Kara, and the "Johnny Cash" look-alike, the guy didn't seem nervous. More angry.

Bruce decided to greet himself to the man. Even though he knew it probably wasn't a good idea. A lonely guy in the back of the room, looking a little angry, probably wasn't someone to mess with. But Bruce never did care for appearances.

Bruce walked over to the seat next to the guy and sat down. Hey man, do you mind if I sit here? Bruce asked as he sat down. By the way, my name is Bruce Wayne. Who might you be? He added.

Smith glanced up from the lecturn at the front of the class where his laptop was loading Power Point. The class had filled up, and there was girl sitting in the front that looked oddly familiar. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. But there was something about those eyes.

Smith turned around and pulled the projector screen down. Once the laptop had loaded Power Point, he clicked on the slideshow for "The Greatest Accomplishments of the 20th Century".

The first slide was a large portrait of the characters Beavis and Butthead sitting on a blue sofa. An audio clip played "heh heh heh cool".

Smith began his lecture to the giggles and outright laughter from several of the students. As he talked, he became more at ease with himself, and eventually began speaking to each student while asking questions and hearing their answers.

He found the blonde-haired human female called 'Kara' was very intelligent. As was the dark-headed male called 'Bruce'. But there was a lot of darkness in young Mr. Wayne. Smith found himself wondering why.

Randal Graves wife was called about her husbands accident and informed that he was being taken to the hospital. In turn she called Smallville High and asked that her daughter be excused from class, so that they might go to the hospital. The office secretary pulled up the class that Misty would be in and made her way there to pull the young lady out of class, for her mother to come pick her up.

She knocked at the door to second period history and waited for the teachers answer. Quietly explaining to the man before stepping into the room to address Misty. "Misty Graves, please come with me..."

Bruce sat and watched the PowerPoint presentation by Mr. Smith. He sure did have a way with kids, Bruce thought.

He noticed that Kara was really bright. And it seemed to Bruce that Mr. Smith had taken an interest to Kara.

During the lecture, Bruce found himself more at ease. He still didn't fit in perfectly, but his mind did not stress that fact as much. But he wound up thinking about subjects he hadn't thought about in a while.

The lecture over the 20th Century showed everything from great lifestyles, revolution, to murder, genocide, and war. Bruce found himself thinking of his parents' death 8 years ago. The murder, the demented laughter of the sick card, and the night he spent alone, for the first time in his life.

Bruce's mind clicked. Anger rose up from within, and he felt something that he had never quite felt before. He wanted something, something that he probably shouldn't want: Vengance.

But Bruce knew that couldn't happen. He didn't like the thought of people dying, and knew he probably wouldn't ever see that joker again, or hear the voice ring out in the night: "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moon light kid?"

Mr. Smith began to talk about the Holocaust. The families that survived, and the tales of those who didn't. Bruce's anger boiled. He began to think of the people around Smallville, around Metropolis, and around Gotham. The crimes that went on, the murders, thefts, rapes, and everything else that Bruce knew no one should ever feel.

Bruce felt like he had to do something...

Misty turned around in her seat to look at who was calling her name she saw a woman in her mid 30's looking at her. She started to ask the woman what she did wrong on the first day of school when it suddenly happened again. She was concentrating on the woman and heard her voice again but her mouth didn't move. poor girl doesn't even know her dad's been in an accident she thinks she did something wrong or something i'm sure.
Before she even had a chance to hear her speak for real she cried out.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY FATHER HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT!"

The woman Looked at her and spoke calmly "Miss Graves please come with me i don't want to discuss this in front of the class but your mother has called to get you excused from classes."

Smith stopped the Power Point presentation and the lecture he was giving.

He looked to Misty, then to Kara, then to the woman at the door.

Misty had reacted to something only she could hear. He had never heard of humans having powers. Sometimes, there was an extraordinary person that had an amplified sense, or maybe was a bit stronger, but nothing on the scale of what a true Kryptonian could do. He had also heard of humans who had telepathy, and could read the minds of others. Could this girl have such a gift?

Kyle Graystone

Bruce Wayne??????
No, it couldn't be.
"I'm Kyle. Nice to meet you."
I wanted to ask him if he was THE Bruce wayne when the teacher came in. He definately got points with me when he let my sunglasses slide, and when he started the powerpoint presentation I relaxed a bit and looked around the room. Most of the kids were drawn in by the lecture, with the exception of a few jocks and some other kids. About halfway through the lecture the door opened and a woman came in.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY FATHER HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT!"

Ok, that was strange. I swear the girl reacted before the secretary said anything. Seems more than me has a secret around here.

Randal Graves was registered into the Smallville ER and taken to a room, where a nurse and an intern checked him over, only to find nothing apparently wrong with him. He was told that his wife had called there daughter out of class and were on their way to see him.

He took a deep breath, and as he breathed out, he began to cough. A puff of green smoke came out as he did. "What the he..." He managed before going into a fit of wracking coughs, puffing out more green smoke with each one. "Someone! *Caff, hnn, caff, caff, hrk!* "Help!" Randal choked out, the air about him filling with the odd green smoke, choking him, stealing his breath.

A passing intern noticed and rushed in to help Graves who was sinking to the floor, gasping and choking for breath. The intern held his breath as he tried to clear the area of the strange gas, only succeeding in spreading it through the room more quickly.

In mere moments the room was filled with it, blotting out sight...

in the midst of the choking cloud of gas Mr. Graves body began to disolve, lose cohesion, become part of the cloud as well. His last word came out as a wheeze, trailing off into nothingness. "Mist..."

The intern that had tried to save him crawled out of the room, gasping for air as the mist began to disipate from the room.

Misty did her best to keep from breaking down as she headed to the office to wait for her mother to pick her up her mind running a thousand miles a minute. what happened to him. It has to be bad to get me out of school. What a way to start off high school. Kara is really cute and nice. I hope we can become closer friends. arg whats wrong with Daddy.Misty broke down and began to cry.

Kara looked up as Misty came to sit down near her, and for a little while the two girls just talked a bit. Kara was introduced to one of Misty's friends, though their personalities just seemed to clash too much. Kara was more of a shy and respectful farm girl while the others were a lot more outgoing. Perhaps overtime Kara might break out of her shell? More students began filing inside, filling up the empty seats until everyone was taken.

Bruce made a brief appearance, and Kara smiled at him as he took a sear next to her. She talked with him for a few seconds until he moved away, more towards the back. If he had remained next to her chances are they'd have been thrown out of class for disrupting the 'learning environment'. But when it came down it... Kara had made some friends. She smiled to herself, trying not to be too giddy. Her laughs came out with the rest of the class as their teacher put up a slide show presentation, introducing as the first slide the characters Beavis and Butthead. The only reason Kara laughed was because everyone else seemed to find it amusing, and she didn't want to seem like the odd one (as she had no idea whom either of them were).

The rest of class seemed to go fairly well, and Kara even managed to answer a few questions that most of the other students were baffled on. She just felt energetic about being in class and participating, proving herself to her peers. But as things seemed to be looking up, there had to be at least one bump in the road. For in the middle of the discussion there was a knock at the door, and a woman was standing at the doorway. She asked for the teachers time for a moment, and then out of nowhere Misty just started shouting out loud, something about her family and an accident. Kara looked on with a concerned face but she was helpless for the most part.

Kyle seemed to be amazed that Bruce Wayne was sitting next to him. Well, that makes one person that knows who I am, Bruce thought to himself. The class went along great, untill Bruce's thoughts had come.

As if it were a sign from God, Misty, the girl that Kara had been talking to, was called out of class. But before the got out of class, out of no where, she started screaming about her dad being in an accident.

Bruce couldn't just sit there and do nothing, not feeling the way he did.

Excuse me Mr. Smith, but I have to go too. I need to make sure that Misty is ok. Bruce told the "Johnny Cash" man in the front.

Bruce, feeling akward that he was doing this, walked out of the classroom before Smith could even excuse him. Bruce walked down the hallway to the office, where Misty and what appeared to be her mother stood.

Bruce called up Alfred on his cell phone, and told him to meet him at the hospital. Before Alfred could reply, Bruce hung up to talk to Misty.

Misty, excuse me, sorry to be rude, but my name is Bruce Wayne, and I was wondering if there was something I could do for you and your family. Bruce asked Misty and her mother. My butler happens to be very skilled in the medical field, and can help out, free of charge Bruce added. The poor young girl was crying.

Bruce had to help. No one could die.

Misty, excuse me, sorry to be rude, but my name is Bruce Wayne, and I was wondering if there was something I could do for you and your family. Bruce asked Misty and her mother. My butler happens to be very skilled in the medical field, and can help out, free of charge

Misty looked up at Bruce with hope in her eyes. The tears stopping for a just a minute. "Bruce we don't even know whats wrong with Daddy yet. If you want to come with us and see if you can help thats fine but i'm sure Lex's people are doing the best they can."

She thought to how she had gotten to know Lex a lot lately how he and her dad were starting to get a bit close. Lex seemed like a caring guy and even brought her a flower everytime he came by. This made her feel special one of the richest men in the world always thinking of her and bringing her something. Daddy would be o kay Lex would make sure of it.

Now this guy Bruce was offering her help. Then she thought for a second to what he said his last name was Wayne. "Omg your Bruce Wayne of Wayne Enterprises? Pleased to meet you Mr. Wayne just wish it was under better Circumstances." The young girl was starting to form hope that everything would be okay.

"What?! What do you mean Graves has disappeared?! Green... Gas... I see... Stay put, I will be there as quickly as possible." Lex said, more than just a little aggitated, hanging up abruptly. As he made his way out to his ferrarri, Lex got the attention of the facilities lead scientist. "Close down, clear out, this project NEVER existed, understand?" "Yes sir." the scientist said before stepping away as Lex hit the exit.

Peeling away in a hurry, Lex made his way to the hospital.

Lex was there, waiting for Graves wife and daughter to arrive, a flower in hand, for Misty.

Misty looked at Bruce and waited an answer when her Mother said "Come along sweetie you can talk to your new friend later." As she grabbed Misty by the hand and pulled her towards the door.

Misty was terrified of going to the hospital and seeing her dad there she was afraid of the worst. She looked to Bruce as she was dragged at the door. "See you there hopefully." she got out just as the door closed behind her.

She arrived at the hospital and was greeted by Lex. she thought to herself he is so charming. As he handed her a rose. "Hi, Lex where is Daddy and thanks for the rose."

Misty's excitement rose when Bruce introduced himself. She was really excited to meet Bruce Wayne of Wayne Enterprises.

Misty's mother took her away. Bruce called Alfred and walked outside. But before he could get an answer, he saw the Benz waiting for him already. He hoped in the back, as Alfred sat in the driver seat, smiling. I figured you would need a ride to the hospital, Master Bruce. But I am curious as to why you are even going to hospital in the first place young sir.

A girls father is in the hospital after an accident. I don't want her to have to go what I went through, and I have a feeling it's pretty serious. Figured we could use your skills, Alfred Bruce said as he smiled back at Alfred, who was already flying towards the hospital.

Bruce remembered what Misty had told him, about someone named Lex, and his men. Alfred, what do you know about a man named Lex? The name sound familiar. Bruce asked.

Lex, Master Bruce? As in Lex Luthor? His father owns LuthorCorp, and Lex has a branch out here in Smallville. He's out here like you are sir. A little misplaced. If you know what I mean. Alfred answered.

Luthor, Lex Luthor. Everything hit him at once. The billionare son who seemed to have it all. The papers called him spoiled rotten, but Bruce knew better then to trust the tabloids.

Finally, someone here who had something in common with Bruce.

They pulled up to the hospital, and went inside. He saw Misty and her mother, standing with another man. Lex, Bruce thought. It had to be. No one else around here dressed that way, other then Bruce himself. Bruce walked up to the three of them.

Misty, I came as soon as I could. Bruce said. Then he turned to Lex Mr. Luthor, nice to meet you. My name is Bruce Wayne. Is there anything that I or my Gentleman here can do to help? Bruce asked, trying to be as polite as he could.

"Mrs. Graves, I got here as soon as I could to check up on your husband... Misty, its so nice to see you again, I sincerely wish it were under other circumstances." Lex said as he handed Misty the rose he had brought for her. "They told me that Randal has... Disappeared..." Lex admited with a concerned look.

Lex looked up as a young man walked up to the three of them. The way that he approached Misty made him think that perhaps he was her boy friend, so he gave Misty a quick congradulatory wink before the boy addressed him.

"Bruce Wayne? I read about what happened to your parents... Unfortunate... I also read that you signed over Wayne industries until you come of age, I must say, that was a very mature dicission you made, all that power at your finger tips... I don't know if I would have at your age." Lex said, extending a hand to the boy.

While Bruce and Lex shook hands a voice seemed to whisper in Misty's ear. "Misty...? My little Misty... Can you hear me...? Oh god, what is happening to me? Help me! Please! Help mmmmeeee..." The voice grew in intencity in her ear before fading away on a breeze of wind.

"DADDY, DADDY, DADDY, where are you DADDY. Did anyone else hear DADDY? WHY ARE YOU ALL JUST STANDING AROUND DADDY IS HERE SOMEWHERE. DADDY!!!"

Lex broke his hand shake with Bruce when Misty began to cry out for her father. He went to her and gave her a consoling hug. "Shh, shh, Misty, it will be okay, I have already got people out looking for him. We will find him, I am sure..." He gave Mrs. Graves another concerned look as he held the poor girl.

"DOES NOONE ELSE HEAR DADDY HE WAS JUST CALLING FOR ME! DADDY!!!" Misty began to cry and panic no one knew where her dad was but she could hear him. "You have to believe me i heard DADDY!!!."
