Civil War

This is a song I had never heard before from a musical I had never heard of. But a couple of weeks ago we went to watch a production at the Royal Academy of Music in London where my eldest son is currently studying a post-grad in Musical Theatre Direction (hence my interest musicals for many years).

The song hit my senses immediately and grabbed my attention throughout. Written with passion and sung with passion I want to share.

Les Miserables

Les Miserables' rights to performance was issued to schools about 10 years ago and my son's school was the first in the UK to be granted. He played Javert, a very powerful and tragic character and one of the leading roles, and received an autographed photo from the West End 'Javert' written with the words "Break a Leg!"

At the suicide scene he almost did when he jumped off the bridge. But those words sum up the ethos of the musical, pure passion.

Strangely the suicide scene gets very few applauses from the audience (50%) and that is because the music doesn't stop, flows into the next piece with no natural break. So, when the family last went to see it in London me and Mark colluded to get the audience applauding. It's true, there is no natural break but, we went for it and before you knew it the whole of the theatre was applauding

Same song, the first from the 10th Anniversary Concert and the second from the 25th.

Despite the improved quality of the visuals I still have my preference.

Feedback?

One Day More (10th Anniversary)

One Day More (25th Anniversary)

Les Miserables, Finale...

This post may be for Les Mis die-hard fans, but it shouldn't be.

The death scene of Jean Valjean still makes me cry even without the stage acting and the props.

A production to celebrate the 25th Anniversary starred Lea Salonga as Fantine who, apart from her beauty, has captured my attention because she also starred in the 10th Anniversary Concert as Eponine, her name keeps cropping up (Star of Miss Saigon for example).

Les Mis Complete Finale, 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 Arena

Now THIS is for Les Mis die-hard fans....

Something of interest...

Summertime is an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin. The song soon became a popular jazz standard.

sung by Harolyn Blackwell

Summertime by Charlotte Church

Feedback: I find a lot of jazz music is timeless :) I mean, you have the musicals
and not forgetting the so called "Big Band Sound"
of the 1930/40's era, right through to theme tunes for
movies and tv, which unfotunately is overlooked or
over listened today...
