Movies!

It was pretty good. I liked it way better than I expected. I just don't like loooooong action scenes that are repetitive.

:rose:

Right?? I am saying this as a guy, but, I don't get the whole 'real' superhero films and then have the protagonist smoother than a tortoise shell. Kinda glad to see some hair on the fellow.

And I would def recommend watching the flick when you're more rested, I thought it was a solid 'hero' story. Forget the whole Superman canon and see it just as a movie by itself as an alien with god-like powers and I think one would appreciate it more versus the evisceration that fan boys gave it.

I watched The Best Offer yesterday. It was excellent, I really enjoyed it! It's a movie about an auctioneer, who collects art and gets a job to evaluate a huge lot of artefacts of a mysterious woman who inherited them from her parents.

Here's the trailer for it.

Enders Game was just okay. They basically stripped the heart out of it, this even though they added in a totally unnecessary love interest. Ugh.

Updated Carrie was a little different and a little better for me. However, the botoxed but losing plumpness lips on the main character was distracting. I wish people didn't continue to do that stupid shit or get cast if they do.

Source Code failed to keep my interest and either I was sick or it made me feel exhausted. I didn't finish the movie and went to bed where I slept rather than read. Yikes!

Yesterday I watched the documentary Senna, about Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna and then Rush, directed by Ron Howard, about the Formula 1 rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Two very good movies about the special high-speed world of Formula 1 racing.

I watched von Trier's Nymphomaniac and loved it. It's hardly a surprise, though, seeing as I've been a fan of his writing and directing ever since The Kingdom. The ending was a bit of a let down and at times it was very underlining, but it was interesting and beautiful in its ruggedness.

It also helped that Nymphomaniac featured heavily sex and trees, which are among my favorite things in the world. :)

I read a fascinating article on how they did the scenes that involve PIV penetration. He filmed some German porn actors doing the penetration and then the stars repeated the same actions. The two sets of shots were then edited together using CGI so the shots showing genitalia were from the porn actors and those showing upper bodies were by the stars.

I saw the one about Senna last summer. Liked it a lot.
I'll have to see if I can find Rush.

Senna has been on my watchlist for a while now, but as it currently has over 500 titles, I've never gotten around to watching it. After recommendations from you and Iris I think I'm gonna bump it on top. :)

I loved loved loved Senna.
I just watched this thing about rally, a lot of history of rally goodness in it, can't remember the name...

(loves things that go fast and have to make left turns as well)

If yo do remember, please post. Sounds like fun.

I don't think I'd watch nymphomaniac. It seems a little too geared towards male fantasy of what a nymphomaniac is. Some of it hit it on the head, but others...

I'm more interested in checking out The Best Offer. That has some interesting twists and turns that I'd like to see if it turns out how I think it will.

Haven't looked at anything new in a few years (not even TV), nothing to suggest...

Have you seen the trailer or how did you form your opinion? I'm not trying to unvalidate your opinion or anything, I'm just curious. :)

I was expecting the movie to be pretty much full on porn based on what people were talking about it, but it wasn't really. Sure, there was a lot of sex, but it also served a point building the stody, by showing the double standard and stereotype of gender roles and showing how much power sex really has over people. Could the same point have been made with less sex or less graphic scenes? Maybe, but I think the sex was far better integrated to the story than in most movies.

I quite liked the story. If you end up watching it anyways, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. :)

There were plenty of hilarious scenes in the movie, too. In one, the main character gets her ass whipped for the first time and yelps when the guy lifts his arm up to deliver the first lash.

His response: "That's not how it goes... Most people don't scream until I hit them." :)

Yes, I watched the trailer, that's why I said some of it seemed right on the head. :D I DID see that scene you mentioned and yes, it was kind of funny.

I have a couple of relatives with degrees in psych, and we used to talk about such topics when we were twenty somethings, which is what I base my opinion on saying I doubt I'd like it. I used to remember a whole lot more but what isn't used often becomes forgotten...

True nymphomaniacs, (along with satyrs, which are both properly called hypersexuals nowadays) are really sad individuals. They normally are extremely sexual, but a true nymphomaniac tends to be almost painfully shy. This is because their overt libido is so intense, it actually frightens them. It's like they know their sex drive is too intense compared to other people. As such, many nymphomaniacs (and satyrs) don't actually have many sexual encounters, but when they do, it's like a stick of dynamite went off in your hand.

They are intensely bisexual, try-sexual, even to the point of not caring about their own health. They don't care about humiliation and what others think when it comes to their own pressing need to attain satisfaction, provided that person will still help them to attain orgasms. They can't get satisfaction from conventional sex or at least normal doses of conventional sex. They can get battered and bruised and still want more, nearly orgasming in the process. A true nymphomaniac would play with herself to the point of having bleeding sores and still try to play with herself some more, if it meant another orgasm.

Like I said, it seemed some of what is in the story is right on, but others (most of it) seems dominated by male fantasy instead.

A lot, most I'd say, of what you wrote there is actually portrayed in the movie. The fourth paragraph of your post is especially spot on when it comes to the movie. :)

I'll readily admit, though, that I don't know anything at all about hypersexuality as a psychological phenomenon, so that's probably why I didn't get a particular male fantasy vibe from watching the movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but with von Trier it's never quite what it seems, in my experience.

It's silly to base an entire movie on one 2-3 minute trailer, but that is part of what they try to do: give a concept based on a trailer.

Again, it seemed some of the trailer hit it right on the head, but the differences, as I know of them, are what would make me scoff at the movie in general. The trouble with most BDSM incorporated in mainstream movies is they always try to make it comical in some way, so as to lessen the impact of the characters and not make them seem fascist/totalitarians (eg Exit to Eden).

I am also a horrible fanboy that if one part of a movie contradicts the written story, I start frothing at the mouth, one exception being The Lord of the Rings. I've seen every attempt at the visual version of that story, and I admit it would be impossible to attempt to put all the aspects of Tolkien's story into a movie without making each movie 4-5 hours long.

The problem with the trailer is that it does a decent job at depicting all aspects of the story, yes, but it doesn't show how they connect and what the backstory is. But yeah, the main character isn't shy and timid as such like you say most hypersexuals are, so if that's the thing that rubbed you the wrong way, then this is not a movie for you. :)

BDSM in the movie isn't showed in a comical light, except from that one scene. And that one scene tied into the movie later on, so it was important, too.

Like Iris said, with von Trier it's always hard to tell what to expect, really. :)

And the papers here are full of reviews by journalists who aren't quite sure what they should think and write. Great fun!:D

Apologies Iris, I should have said something before but I was nodding. I'm not actually familiar with any of Von Trier's work, so...

Seela, well, there were other little things too. I'm not fully awake right now, maybe I'll address this later, if I remember that is.

I rarely actually go to the movies, too expensive. But we went to see "The Grand Budapest Hotel" loved it!
It's beautiful and funny. The ending was a bit abrupt but maybe because I could have watched hours more. The style, the costumes, the characters, I want more.
