If Republicans want to promote unity, they should join Democrats in impeaching Trump

He was trying to compare true liberals to today's democrats, I can't see it?

They cling to the image because it's less vile looking....despite the fact that they'll turn right around and tell you the federal government should be micromanaging everything.

It's being honest and correct. You just want "deplorable" to be accepted so that you can feel normal and justified. It isn't, and this has nothing to do with seeking unity.

I'm glad KeithD is ok being called and anti-American socialist shit stain...it's honest and correct after all. :D

The Republicans asking for unity is just them admitting, "Oh shit, we can't defend this...so how about we just sweep this under the rug and forget it ever happened, huh? C'mon, just nevermind that the hardcore base of our party believing lunatic conspiracy theories from the internet, and on the President's encouragement, tried to storm the capital building and hang duly elected officials of that government."

No unity.

I'm sure it's been said already, but the last time we tried unity after beating a bunch of racists, the President was murdered, and Jim Crow took hold.

No unity. Fuck them.

And I have yet to hear an apology for their actions. I will give them the same unity they gave us

Not very liberal either, which is why you support authoritarian leftist and their ideals like healthcare as a right. ;)

I believe in many of the issues that trump used to get you suckers to vote for him. The difference being that I have known trump for a long time. The whole four years was about trump which is what he wanted. He is a con man, grifter. I would have loved to have seen Ross Perot run the Country.

A random comment elsewhere I decided to steal and drop here:

Lum Jo
The only thing they have that unites them is white grievance and toxic masculinity. There are some members that maybe don't lean into those, but they happily support such things to build their governing coalition.

The GOP hasn't come up with a new idea in 20 years. They used to come up with conservative solutions to problems... things like cap-and-trade, pollution taxes, UBI, healthcare mandates, etc... all came out of conservative think tanks.

But about 30 years ago, Newt Gingrich (and to a lessor extent Reagan) pitched the idea of total political warfare... if the otherside was for something, the party had to oppose it... and that dovetailed horribly with Clinton, who actually endorsed and accepted many "conservative" positions - to the chagrin to many on the left. But if the Dems were for something, the GOP had to be against it (even if it was a GOP idea not 5 years prior)... and this came to include things like basic acceptance of empirical facts and science.

The net effect was that the GOP drive further and further right... and then Fox News and right-wing media figured out that creating an alternate reality to pander to these views was profitable... and it went even more nutso... to the point that you had folks deciding Sandy Hook was a conspiracy, or that Obama was a "machurian candidate" plant born in Kenya and a muslim.... and there were plenty in right-wing media that had no problem trumpeting these assertions.

Enter Trump - he dove directly into these conspiracies, and told the GOP base - don't worry... these crazy things are NOT conspiracies... I can be for universal single healthcare one day, yet be a paragon of Republican virtue the next. Whatever you think is true and I'll save you from ANYONE that disagrees! And he used the same tools to turn the base on any GOPers that dared question the fake reality that had been created. He was both a producer, product, and a mainstreaming of the insanity.

The GOP voters have been lied to for 30 years by the people they most trusted. Is there any wonder why they can't distinguish truth from reality anymore?

It’s an open and shut case. The president incited a violent insurrection against another branch of the U.S. government. He needs to leave office immediately — either via resignation, the 25th Amendment or impeachment. His most egregious enablers — such as Sens. Josh Hawley (R.-Mo.) and Ted Cruz (R.-Tex.) — should be either censured or expelled for violating their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution.

But while Democrats are moving forward with impeachment, Republicans are rushing forward with a litany of lame excuses. “Impeaching the President … will only divide our country more,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R.-Calif.) after having attempted to throw out the votes of Biden supporters. “We must work together to lower the temperature and unite the country.” Republicans seem less exercised about Trump instigating an insurrection than they are about social media companies preventing Trump from provoking more violence and sedition.

So let me get this straight. Republicans spent the whole campaign predicting that a Democratic victory would, as Trump said, “destroy our country as we know it.” And then they spent the past two months arguing that Joe Biden’s victory was tainted by fraud. Even after the riot, 139 House Republicans and eight Senate Republicans still voted not to certify the election results in at least one state.

And now they want unity? Now they want to put divisiveness behind us? This isn’t an attempt to heal the country; it’s an attempt to avoid accountability for those who attacked it.

In the wake of a failed coup, the Republicans are rushing forward with pleas to ignore the coup and to grant everyone involved unconditional forgiveness.

“Impeaching the President … will only divide our country more,” they say, “We must work together to lower the temperature and unite the country,” they say, “Investigations, prosecutions and impeachment will prevent the nation from healing,” they say.

Yeah, here’s the thing, you can’t heal without first removing the malignant tumor that made you sick.

We’re dealing with a situation where thousands of people utterly rejected American democracy and assaulted one of America’s most central institutions of government. These insurrectionists came with bombs, firearms, schematics and maps of the building, and set about to capture and kill our elected leaders. Some wore tactical gear and carried flex ties, which would have been useful for kidnapping and hostage-taking. If not for the quick thinking of the Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman, who drew a column away from the Senate floor, they might have walked through the unlocked doors and into a chamber still filled with lawmakers.

Only on Friday did it become clear how much danger Pence had been in. Secret Service officers whisked Pence and his family to a hideaway in the Capitol—but just one minute before Goodman made his stand, and only about 100 feet from the stairs up which the officer was chased by the mob, according to the Post.

Without Officer Goodman, things could have been much worse. A firefight could have broken out between police and insurrectionists. Members of Congress could have been taken hostage or killed. Pelosi could have been shot and killed. Pence could have been lynched. The insurrectionists were there because the president of the United States lied to them, claiming that the election had been stolen and that Pence could save Trump’s presidency, and because he had demanded that they act. “We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore,” he said that day.

And while people inside the Capitol Building were dying, Trump was in a tent, watching the drama unfold on TV and enjoying the show.

Trump incited the attempted coup and then watched it with delight. He actively resisted calling out the National Guard, a task that reportedly fell to the besieged Pence.

If America is going to heal, the people who are responsible for inciting and perpetrating this act of violence against America need to be investigated, prosecuted and punished. If we don’t cut out the cancerous tumor that did all this damage, we’re just encouraging it to metastasize and spread.

Or...

Or, if the DNC wants unity they can come forward and admit that they rigged the election and ask for forgiveness. Joe could admit that he did not realize he was running for POTUS. President elect Harris could apologize for saying that: "She was that little girl" during the debate when she was slamming Joe's racist history and make it clear that she is now woke and realizes she was once: "That little person" and not "that little girl."

Amen and Awomen!
