What I've noticed is that some people, mostly men, are dealing with the future shock associated with gender issues that have been around for millennia but were pushed under the rug in many societies for at least that long. Nobody wants to be shoved under the rug just because they don't happen to reside in the middle of the bell curve of statistical distribution, so things are finally changing.

Some people resent change and believe that it threatens their sense of control and their black-and-white interpretation of gender, so they respond with smugness and disrespect.
