Washington (AFP) - The United States Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear what may be its most significant case in decades on the controversial subject of abortion.

At issue is a state law in Louisiana which requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Ziegler said the ruling in the Louisiana case "might tell you something about how the court might view other precedent, including Roe v Wade."

SCOTUS could have supported life by denying cert. This case is about possibly throwing out the law, which was upheld by the lower courts.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dominates in abortion case

Washington (CNN)If there is any question whether 86-year-old Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has spent her life steeped in issues concerning women's rights, is slowing down after four bouts of cancer, it was not evident Wednesday morning in Washington.

For over an hour, Ginsburg, the leading liberal on the bench, engaged in a high stakes constitutional version of whack-a-mole, taking down arguments put forward by supporters of a Louisiana abortion access law that requires doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

As lawyers for the state and the Trump administration urged the justices to greenlight the law, arguing it is necessary to protect public safety, Ginsburg worked to dismantle each of their arguments one by one. At times, she even went after her own conservative colleagues.

Ginsburg, who has served almost 30 years on the Supreme Court, is witnessing efforts by Republican-led states, emboldened by a new conservative majority on the Court, to pass increasingly restrictive abortion laws. Abortion rights supporters, who have spent years in the trenches, are fearful that the Court is rolling back rights. In Court, Ginsburg calmly, persistently and systematically dissected each point.

It wont stop abortions, it will just make it a criminal offense and dangerous for the mother. Might as well just start another just say no campaign, you'll get the same results.

One of the reasons is that they won't be burdened by an unwanted pregnancy.

Unwanted pregnancy isn't an inherently life threatening medical condition.

Critical thinking isn't really your thing.

Maybe not, I seem to do just fine though.

So you don't have anything to support your assertion earlier that abortion is a...

medical procedure that saves women's lives in most cases.

No??? Not one medical journal with some stats to back that up???

Imagine everyone who reads this threads surprise :D

I'm all for a womans right to choose, but let's not bullshit, the number of abortions that happen because if they don't she's going to die, such as ectopic pregnancies etc. is relatively small.

This report reviews available statistics regarding reasons given for obtaining abortions in the United States, including surveys by the Alan Guttmacher Institute and data from seven state health/statistics agencies that report relevant statistics (Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Utah). The official data imply that AGI claims regarding "hard case" abortions are inflated by roughly a factor of three. Actual percentage of U.S. abortions in "hard cases" are estimated as follows: in cases of rape, 0.3%; in cases of incest, 0.03%; in cases of risk to maternal life, 0.1%; in cases of risk to maternal health, 0.8%; and in cases of fetal health issues, 0.5%. About 98.3% of abortions in the United States are elective, including socio-economic reasons or for birth control. This includes perhaps 30% for primarily economic reasons and possibly 0.1% each for sex selection and selective reduction of multifetal pregnancies.
