This may not be the best place to ask, but how do you set it so that anonymous people cannot comment on your stories? There are people that comment on my tales that I would like to respond to, but unfortunately I can't because they are anonymous. Does anyone know how to set this up in the setting?

On your author page (at least in the old look) click through on Main and Options and you see a choice of accepting anonymous feedback or not.

If you use the new panel, go to Options on the left-side panel, then My Options top-right. You'll find two buttons, one to turn Comments on or off, the second to turn Feedback on or off.

Feedback on/off is a global setting, Comments on/off can be set story by story - many writers allow comments for some stories, not others. You can also set voting on or off, story by story - you do this when the story is submitted (Advanced Options, I think).

Keep in mind some of the best comments you'll get can be anons. Some of the worst or most inane, too, but then you can delete any comment you like.

Any author who posts stories on Lit has received an anonymous comment at some point. You are reacting, not because you can’t reapond to them, but rather because you don’t know their identity. It’s a control factor/issue. If the comment is offensive, delete it. It takes less time to delete a comment than writing it.

With that said, I will echo EB and say some of the most valuable comments I have received have come from anonymous people. I don’t care why they stay anonymous- maybe they don’t want to be associated with reading a story by a transvestite. That isn’t the point, though. The point is it’s already hard enough to get a comment good or bad on this site. Preventing anonymous comments is totally on you.

Think about this: if all you ever received were nice, praise worthy comments that boost your ego, would you strive to be better? I think not. History is full of people that went on to do/write great things when faced with opposition from anonymous people. I value criticism moreso than praise. It motivates me to do better. I don’t always listen, but that doesn’t mean I dismiss it either.

In time, you will see not all anonymous comments are bad.

Thanks guys! I've figured out the delete comments. I was getting a bit flustered as I was getting offensive feedback, but Ive just deleted them now - back to writing! 😀

anonymous

I occasionally receive an anonymous comment regarding political issues in a story. I don't mind that the comment might be disagreeable to me, but that no one can respond to it and be assured the commenter will see it. Since I see all the comments on my stories, I feel like the anonymous commenter is insulting or taking advantage. So I delete those comments, or I will in future.

Even pseudonymous authors need not accept insult or blind partisanship without recourse. I like comments, even critical political ones, but I don't think I have to leave a political comment standing when the commenter has insulated himself from a response.

Offensive feedback can still be good feedback. The commenter was bothered enough to respond. You can learn from that.

There's no point in writing if you have thin skin and criticism is going to bother you. Someone is ALWAYS going to dislike what you wrote and they don't have to be anons

I've seen writers go as far as disabling both voting and comments. They're the ones you never see improving.

One of the stories I find the absolutely hottest on this site have any way of feedback disabled. Alas, it's also unfinished and ends like in the middle of the sentence (literally!). Even despite that, or maybe because of that, I would very love to express my love for the fragment published, and it hurts there no way.

There is only something to learn from an anonymous stranger (other than that their comment can be deleted) if you can see that their criticism is valid yourself. If no reason is given to consider their opinion or assertion is valid, their feedback is worthless.

There are idiots

There are anonymous idiots who leave malicious comments. You can delete them as they are worthless. There are good comments left anonymously and it is a pity you can’t respond. There are always stupid comments that are so stupid it’s best to leave them.

The only comments I would delete are the malicious ones and then not all.

This is a stupid comment that I haven’t deleted because it is so stupid. He/she went to all that effort and never said what they actually thought of the story. Perhaps they never read beyond the first paragraph?

I came here to learn and improve so I am interested in feedback but I am hoping feedback will generally give me something to work on. I have not had many comments yet but hopefully most will reflect how the reader actually feels. I feel sorry for those who merely wish to offend. It must be sad to be so unfulfilled

You can get better, more detailed feedback help by asking for it on specific stories here on "Story Feedback."

Thank you KeithD. Yes. I intend to do that with one that is pending called Redemption

I once turned off anonymous comments cause I had a notorious troll stalking me putting death threats in the comments. That was about 2 years ago.

I must warn you that if you disable anonymous comments, you will see a drastic decrease in receiving comments all together. I stopped getting comments for several months until I turned it back on. Some people just don't want to take the time to make an account.

It's not just about time. Many people are shy about their porn habits and creating an account on a porn site can feel like a big step.

This, plus many people who DO have accounts nevertheless post comments anonymously. There are legitimate reasons to do so. I think this is fairly common.

I was under the impression that you had to open an account to make any comment, anonymous or not, but I must be mistaken.

Nay, you only have to solve a trivial ancient capcha (and yes, I just tested it). Probably part of the problem why they had to introduce "moderation" of comments (but whatever cerberus bot they employed is a real good shit, actually).

Good point. I've done that occasionally, when I wasn't sure whether the author might have an OTT reaction to comments, or just when I don't want to leave a trail of exactly what I'm reading.

I'm fairly certain there is no email hosting service that uses that extension, so it appears all that is required to circumvent the anonymous block is to fill in the blank with something.

As far as the message itself, I was actually impressed the responder had the capability to use the term pavian, but then I saw Cyclon B. The substance is Zyklon B, so he/she lost their cred.

Wait how is their comment stupid?

I do this too at times. Mostly I just don't want to appear to be commenting to spread my own name around. If I think it would encourage an author to have a fellow writer make a public comment I will. I pretty much always follow the Bambi rule: If you don't have something nice to say just don't say anything at all.

A bit off topic; I dislike the vote/scoring system far more than any problem with comments. If a 3 is mid-point average, seems that a 4.5 is a high mark for a "hot" story. But, since it is the mark, it's hard to give any vote below a 5 because you know it will have a overbalanced effect on that person's story. I generally follow the Bambi Rule on voting too.

You don't have to input anything in the email line on the feedback form. It's nice that the emailer chose to entertain you by making something up!

On another note let me welcome you to the forum. For anyone who hasn't read J267 his stories are fkn awesome. Well written and well thought out. :)

Definitely one of the top authors on the site.

I have never left an anonymous comment since I registered for this site. If I didn’t want to leave a comment on the actual story but wanted the writer to know and tell them who I was I would message them.

If I haven’t liked the story I’ve always made sure that any comment I make has been constructive and positive. If I’ve begun reading but given up I never leave a comment or a vote.

It’s a pity that there isn’t a 10 point voting system. It would make it a lot easier when deciding what to do and a more accurate figure. I wonder how easy it would be to change to such a system and, more importantly, would it be possible to convert the existing votes. I’m too computer illiterate to know whether it could be done or whether I’m just being completely stupid. Probably the latter.

I have given a 5 to a story that I would have liked to have given a 4.5 but it’s not possible. So I think it’s more than a 4 but I can’t vote as I want to and the same applies as you go downwards. In some ways the scoring system is absolutely useless and bears no comparison with reality.

I’ve read stories at 4.75 that are absolutely crap and 3.75 that are really good. How is that right? That’s one of the reason why I go by the title, the description and then read the first hundred words.

I could be wrong since I haven't been here that long, relatively speaking, but I believe that the 5 star rating system predates the hot story feature. In that case four stars given before the hot story would have been considered good while now it is considered a failure and only five star ratings are considered acceptable to many. Doubt things will change and if they did there will always be those that will manipulate for their favorites because some things never change.
