Here's the deal.

1. All personal firearms should be allowed. Pistols, rifles, shotguns, semi automatics, automatics, sniper scopes, whatever. And all ammo types. And all sizes of ammo clips.

2. As long as you're of legal age, have no criminal record, no history of substance abuse, and is sane, you're allowed to buy, keep and carry any type of gun.

3. A standard mental heath check dealing with your tendencies towards agression and your attitude towards weapons should be constructed.

4. Paranoia is insanity. If a mental health check indicates that you think either the martians, the illuminati, "the niggers", or the blue helmeted guys in black helicopers are gonna git ya, congratulations, you're nuts and not trusted with firearms.

5. Weapon fetish is insanity. If a mental health check indicates that you think guns are "cool", you're a fucking sociopath who should not be allowed near gun stores, shooting ranges or children, including your own.

Cool?

And here I was afraid that no one would make a gun thread this hour.

It's a start, and this is from somebody that actually worked in small arms for about 10 years!

Works for me, especially 3-5.

A guy on the crazy after midnight conspiracy talk radio last night (I had to make a late night run. Sue me.) called in to say he "practices his gun rights every day."

What the fuck does that mean? I actually asked the radio that while driving.

Cool. This board will be mostly unarmed. That's better.:)

Probably the same guy I heard say, "I can rest assure you of that."

1. Agreed

2. Agreed

3. AGREED

4. Agreed

5. Disagree. Gun collections are just like any other. My g-pa had a gun collection with some really, really neat older firearms and he's the sanest person I know. I have a knife collection, and I'm not that crazy ;)

Points one through four should determine a person's mindset. If they pass 1-4, I think they're likely mature enough to have a gun collection if they so choose.

I'm buying a sword. Wait, no, ten swords... 'cause bitches love swords.

Pretty much. Although substance abuse history is thorny. Law enforcement officers and soldiers have a pretty high rate of addiction compared to the general population. Do we disarm them as well, or can we include some sort of provision about successful treatment and passing whiz quizzes or whatever?

That's where things get a bit fuzzy. Topics like this seem to be black and white at first, but then details begin to emerge.

Going by that logic, what if someone has a criminal record, but for a non-violent offense?

What if an otherwise sane person had some terrible trauma happen to them and, for a short time, had to go on depression medication? etc... etc...

There are no easy answers.

There are thousands of easy answers, but none of them make any sense.

I guess a case could be made for antiques or the engineering/craftsman perspective.

But this

or this

is mental illness. I'm not even half kidding.

Ah. Yes. Immature 'zomg I haz cool GUN' type folk probably should be taken into account. But still, not every single one of them will be guaranteed to go out and harm someone just because they have a gun. There are just too many variables. :/

Details are for hashing out.

"There are no easy answers" ís not an excuse to not seek answers. Because there's bloody well a question.

Exactly. Which is why I've been responding to your thread. :)

Non argument. Nobody is ever guaranteed to go out and harm someone. What we want it to keep an extra eye on those that are a bit more likely to. And maybe, just maybe try and keep the most effective tools for doing so away from them.
