you know things are bad

We used to leave a light on...soft and gentle to warm the room...not invade it. Light soft lilting music helps...soothes the brain...light a candle with a soft floral scent...leave it burning...

Our oldest used to get them and she would run through the house screaming....the light and the music helped...the candle helps me now.

I can understand that...:(

I have sleep paralysis... especially when I am stressed out...

Try calling your mom or a friend...just to clear your mind and know that you are loved before you sleep.

I have a hard time getting to sleep sometimes. Everything I tried not to think about durring the day comes back to me when I slow down. I used to be able to picture Snoopy or Spiderman n my mind and then be able to fall asleep that way.

I completely understand, and have been there way to many times myself.
*hugs of comfort*
Sorry that you're having to go through it.

Lexie have you ever had a lucid dream or any dream where you had some form of control?

az, i've tried to do lucid dreaming many many times. very little is effective at combatting these nightmares. i've tried at least a dozen different meditation and visualization techniques.

my psyche just won't let up.

As much as it's a bad thing.. it's also kind of interesting to find someone who's gone through the same thing I have/do.
I've done meditation, mild hyponotism<sp>, and visualization also, not to mention various drugs that were supposed to help. ...... same thing.
Nothing works. When the dreams come, they come.... they're vivid, to real, and keep me awake for many days and nights from fear of sleeping and going back.
You said that 'very little' is effective.... I'm curious to know if there's anything specific you've tried that's helped at least a bit?

Damn

A year or so ago Vixenshe was having Night terror problems and I talked her through some lucid dreaming techniques.

I used to have some pretty nasty night terror problems till I learned how to lucid dream fairly well.

I don't know what else you can try if you don't have an apptitute for lucid dreaming.

You might want to try some of the herbal or possibly even chemical based sleeping agents though.

I am sorry I know how bad night terrors can get espesialy if you feel helpless in your dreams.

Only other thing I could think to try would be to sleep with someone. Sometimes just knowing someone is there will help with the night terrors.

well, when i still lived in my parents' house i would sleep in the living room where i could lock all the doors and windows and then watch tv with the lights on and my cat sitting on my legs until i fell asleep. that didn't always keep them from coming back, but taking a bunch of steps to ground myself in my physical surroundings did help to keep the fear from overwhelming me when i'm awake.

sometimes sleeping with another person helps, but again that doesn't prevent the bad dreams, it just makes them more bareable. unfortunately i have to be extremely comfortable with someone to be able to sleep next to them, and i can only think of about 3 people in the world who i could do that with. all of them live far away :(

Lexie I got this armoatherapy clock that really has helped me sleep you might want to try that.

The clock has several different settings but the one I normaly use is this one.

The clock plays relaxing natural sounds for 30 minutes slowly reducing the volume steadily over the 30 minutes till there is no sound. I usually use the night forest sounds but there is also a flowing stream sound and two other settings.

The clock also slowly reduced the light level that comes out of it over the 30 minute period until there is no light emitted.

Finally you can load several different types of pellets that have different aromas. I usually use the lavender scent but there are three other types of pellets included.

I can go find out the make of the clock that I have if you are interested.

that's really nice of you sweetie, but i'm broke as hell and those things are usually pretty expensive. thank you for the suggestion though

Hmm.. something that I did very similar. When at my parents last time.. and a couple times this time. I'd sleep on the couch downstairs,.. my father would always stay up fairly late reading in the dining room that's attached, with the light on. He's always been a strong person which helped me feel safer I think. That helped quite a bit also at the time.
It really has always been something that I wish I could find more of a way to have control over.
As far as the sleeping next to somebody... I completely agree that it adds to the comfort and dealing with it, but unforunately doesn't make them disappear.

i have one of them realy realy bright alarm clocks.. it lights up the room nicely. but if i get out of bed and walk around i have to have my flash light...

have had many strange things happen to me.. so sleeping is a very elusive thing most of the time. and the dreams i do have when asleep will freak out a shrink..lol

Homeopathic Remedies

I have a similliar disorder that effects my sleep, I find taking herbal suppliments such as Passionflower or Skullcap greatly alieves the worst of it, 5HTP is also good for rebalancing the chemicals that induce sleep....

:(

I got mine for a christmas present a couple of years ago so I have no idea how much it cost.

I think I am about out of ideas though sorry.

If you want to talk about it some and maybe see if vocalizing your night terrors would help then PM me and I will give you my AIM name.

Since don't suffer from this malady, it is hard to come up with any strategies that may help.

I hope it isn't too severe and that your rommie might be talked into helping you out.

There is such a thing as adults who suffer from night terrors? I always thought that was a childhood problem. I guess I'm not much help here, either. It is rare for me to have a bad dream.
