The only thing in our favor against the Chinese is their military and it's commanders haven't seen major combat since 1951. Th Red Chinese Air Force did get slapped around by the Taiwan in 1958, the Red Chinese Army was mauled in 1979 by the Vietnamese Army, and just recently the Indian Army kicked their asses back across their northern border. They know that under a strong American President a violent engagement with the US military on the high seas will be a huge game changer with far reaching ramifications for both countries, but under a weak indecisive President, prone to negotiation, such a gamble could play out in their favor.
