Yet another bizarre computer question

For some reason I can't access Hotmail on this computer. If I use the laptop, it's fine. Absolutely no problems. But on this one, no dice. I can type in my name and password, but all I get after that is a screen that says "cannot find server".

Give me an idea of where I can look to solve this problem. I've already changed the security settings, and no change. What else can I do?

So it's not just me who has this problem! I can log in at work to Hotmail where there's loads of security but at home the only way I can get my Hotmail is by pulling it into Outlook.

And now MSN in the uk is plastered with ads for MSN8. If the free software doesn't work I'm not going to pay £60 per year.

Do you have trouble with any other sites or is it just and specifically Hotmail?

If you have problems with other sites then it sounds like a possible DNS (Domain Name Server) error. If you just have problems with Hotmail it possibility is a cookie problem.

I think it is a cookie problem. I'll have a go at fixing it later.

Here's why I think it's cookies. This might help someone else with a similar problem. Then again, I could just be a complete dolt. LOL

I just finished downloading Netscape, and before using it, I reset some of the security settings. Such as to warn before accepting cookies, and not to allow all cookies. Tried Hotmail, and allowed it to set a cookie. Didn't allow msn to set a cookie. Hotmail kept asking for my password, over and over after that. Changed some settings, same thing. Got smart and deleted all cookies from netscape and tried it again. Now it works. Now I gotta kick IE's ass this evening.

It could be a "refresh" problem, where it'snot reloading the URL when you enter the password. I don't use hotmail, so I don't remember if it's one of those sites that uses the same URL and depends on the cookies to tell if you're logged in or not. The local Library system's website is one where I have to force a refresh when I enter my userID/PIN# to get past the login page.

If hotmail uses frames, check to see if there is "noframe version" you can use.

There are no frames in Hotmail. As far as I know. I've refreshed the screen frequently. Still no dice. I don't know what's going on with it. Can't find a setting for cookies. IE 5.5 Mentioned it to hubby, but he was too tired to care, and he said he's had no problems.

I don't know that much about IE, so I don't know what else to try. Netscape works fine though.
