Draco,
I have a 20 gigabyte hard drive that contains a lot of very important work data files. Are you saying my protection would be significantly improved if I created a partition so that say, 5 GB remained in the C: drive for the active, reloadable programs, and 15 GB was in an H: drive for data? I do back up with my CD-RW drive, but not as often as I should...
Yes, thats what I always maintain. All it would take is one "boot sector" virus and all your work data has gone, costing you time and MONEY. Any hard-drive should be partitioned (no matter what size it is) Windows is a fickle beast and can crash and take out most of your data with it.
My own system (running Win2000 Pro) has a seperate drive (4 gb) for the Operating System and then all my data, music, games, porn and all other stuff is stored on a partitioned 20 gb. Win 2000 is far more stable, but after loosing everything once or twice, I came to the conclusion, better to be safe than sorry.
Partition Magic can create these new partitions without risking your data, there are other programs, but PMP is the one I know and trust.
It has a relatively simple "wizard type" interface which walks you thru the operations step by step....
See the chart attached for the requirements. I dont want to confuse anyone with technical jargon, so this graph will explain to you the things you will need to know.
Primary Partition
Extended Partition
Logical Drives
Boot Partition (or Startable)
