There is a nasty booter on Yahoo! now which literally is a hard drive booter , you lose everything , no warning , comes as a Y pager error ...

So please back up all things on your pc that you value ....

I have been getting an illegal operation in my offline messages.

Yahoo doesnt like my computer. I guess now thats a good thing.

I've had problems with mine since day 1. I thought it was just me. :)

Well, I've had problems with Yahoo too...I uninstalled it and went back to an earlier version which I had saved to disk. Its an australian version, so you get a few adverts for Sold.com (an aussie auction site run by yahoo), but it works and works well.

A tip to all, keep your anti-virus program up to date and scan your drives regularly and this shouldn't be a problem.

One thing I did notice with the latest version of Yahoo, it wont connect to any of the older versions (webcam only), all other message functions worked ok, but it was very buggy. The older version (5.0.0.1066) seems much better and I'll stick with it until they release a newer one, minus its bugs.

PS: I can make this version of Yahoo available to anyone who wants it...PM me for my email address....:)

I wish I knew this a few days before I lost everything... I had to reload windows and lost all my stuff.... thank goodness its just stuff.:(

Misstaken , you sound like you have an offline booter in your offlines , so what you need to do is go to , My computer, C drive , Programmes , Yahoo folder , Messenger folder , Stored IM's , open up the folder and delete all stored IM's in that folder , then reboot your pc ....then try messegner again ....

The older version of Yahoo! messenger 5.0.0.1066 is by far the best to run , I must admit that is what I run ...I find 5.5 versions very "buggy" .....

This is one very good site I use at Yahoo! a lot ..

Also this site has a Yahoo! messenger for the Brits to use since we have been barred from Adult rooms here ....

As I always maintain...dont keep IMPORTANT data on your C:\. Find some "Partitioning" software and split your drives (especially all those of you running anything over a TEN gig drive.) Or buy yourself a CD-RW (c'mon, they are cheap now...whats $100 US for a small PC insurance policy?) and put all your important stuff on CD.

Personally I would recommend Partition Magic Pro. (now you have to buy it or find a cracked version {who said that..?:D } because the demo DOES NOT let you do the actual Partitioning...it goes thru the motions and allows you to do everything BUT the final step which actually creates the new partitions.

Windows, by its very nature (especially 98 versions and ME) is an unstable beast...so keeping backups makes perfect sense. But never rely on the Windows in-built Backup program...it useless and so are your backups if Windows has gone belly up. Find a good "aftermarket Program....try CNet or ZDNet, they have lots of "try before you buy" or shareware programs.

If you want to try Partitioning...I can make tutorials based on Partition Magic Pro Version 7 availble ...just PM me and I'll write one up.

Draco , I agree with all you say , but not everybody is fortunate enough to be able to afford at least £80 for a cd burner ...I know I am lucky , I do have one , but I must admit I have backed up all my programmes for several friends and sent them in the post to them ....as they have been wiped out by this booter ...

I do back up some things still to floppy as I find it easier for smaller things like my Yahoo! emotes , my favourites etc ....

I dont understand partioning at all , perhaps you could explain it to me please ?

Partition - A division of memory or disk storage into logical sections.

Basically you are dividing up your drive space into pieces. This is mainly used to segragate data, so you can store some items(system files) on drive c, and other data(Mp3's, games, movies) on drive d. If you needed to reload windows, you would just need to get rid of drive c and all of your data on drive d would still be there. Therefore not losing anything "important".

I have not had any problems either, but I'm on guard now. Thanks for the links!

Yahoo has been showing people as being online when they’re not and showing them offline when they’re online. And some of the messages don’t show up on the screen. It’s very frustrating. I’ve been using ICQ as backup with the main person I chat with.

Draco,

I have a 20 gigabyte hard drive that contains a lot of very important work data files. Are you saying my protection would be significantly improved if I created a partition so that say, 5 GB remained in the C: drive for the active, reloadable programs, and 15 GB was in an H: drive for data? I do back up with my CD-RW drive, but not as often as I should...

Also, I use both a Zone Alarm firewall, and the 2003 version of Norton System Works, which supposedly stops instant message viruses as well as e-mail viruses. I've found that Zone Alarm seems to reduce the number of Yahoo boot codes that work, but not all of them. Does anyone know if the new Norton is effective against Yahoo boot codes? I haven't been on Yahoo much since installing it, but don't like the sounds of that new boot code at all.

If anyone can help me with a couple of nit-picky details I am having after wiping my hard drive and re-installing Windows, I would appreciate it. One is that in reloading all my data from my CD-RW backup everything became read only files. Any way to avoid that or do a fix? Another is that Netscape will not allow me to re-load my old e-mail files and bookmarks... any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Asenath, are you using version 5.5 , to check this go to Help on top right of messenger , about messenger and check , and if you are I would strongly recommend you to clean uninstal that version and get version 5.0.0.1066....

If you go to this link ...

http://www.freecreed.com/beta_repair.html

Right down bottom under older versions click that and it brings you up a menu of 5.0 versions ...I persoanlly use 1066 , but that is my preference ..

The only problem with 5.5 against 5.0 is you cant view webcams between the versions , so if your friends are on 5.5. and webcamming you cant see them on 5.0 ....

If you do decide to change then please clean uninstal by total removal off Yahoo! messenger folder , from My computer , C drive , Programme folder , Yahoo! folder , then inside that should be messenger folder , delete that messsenger folder after uninstal through add /remove programmes ...and if you run reg cleaner , run that then , then reboot and come back in and download from Freecreeds site .....

Hopefully that will help with your problems ...

got me

i got so locked up i had to re format hard drive bastards locked me up completely it to almost 31 hours to get everything back together they suck

Cajunman , I have a link for a direct phone number for Yahoo!

This is it , if you are interested in reporting this abuse to them ...

For America 408 349 3300 or U.K. 0207 8084444 selection option 2 and 4 ...Australia 130 013 6188...

This new booter they are using has to be reported as much as possible as this hard drive killer is a right swine .....

BTW, I meant to say on a previous thread if anybody wants a filter for their messsenger , but only 5.0 i am afraid , please pm me ...

I'm not 100% sure but I think that the booter work only when you have windows XP installed and dont have the SP1 pack. And if you have windows XP and not the sp1 pack you can fix the problem here:

oh and by the way, the webcam dont work if you have 5.0, one of the 2 participants must have the last version to make it work.

you can find old version of all kind of software here http://www.oldversion.com
