Yeah. It's 5-6 hours by car from Boston to Bar Harbor, just south of Washington County. I'm guessing it was 7-8 to wherever you were going from Providence.
Geez, it's not inbreeding. It's poverty, and, perhaps, meth; Washington County is the poorest county in the state, and, like many poor, rural places, it has a serious lack of health and dental care, and some drug problems.
[Moreover, unlike poor, rural places in the south that have historically attracted massive policy attention and activism for health care and drugs, poor, rural places in the north are often overlooked; poverty attention in the north is aimed at cities.]
But it's no accident David Shipler, in his book The Working Poor: Invisible in America, chose a toothless woman in Maine (or maybe NH? same thing) as his example of the cycle of poor, rural, northern poverty. It's been a while since I read it, but I think she worked at a Wal-Mart, found it nearly impossible to heat her house on her income, and had no teeth.
My father was from a poor, rural county in New York, one that was devistated by Hurricanes Irene and Lee. They need health care and drug help.
