Writing for the approbation of other authors

Writing for the approbation of other authors

I have a worked example of this.

My first novel, The Story of Nix, is limping along when it comes to views. My unrequited lover is simping so hard by offering me one star roses, that it’s actually romantic. So I should be down at heart, right?

In fact I’m elated. So many authors have provided positive feedback in comments, or PMs, or on BlueSky than it’s wildly exceeded my expectations. And this includes quite a few who are new to my work. So color me elitist, I’m happy that writers like what I have written, even if only a dozen or so other readers have looked at the work.

I guess that answers my own question 😊.

Back to the original question. Authors should not denigrate other authors, either publicly or secretly by one bombing them. Musicians do not denigrate musicians of another genre, why should we. I think writers write for an audience, but also for their peers. I am more of a reader/commenter than an author, but do my best to support authors I have met in this group, and always, if possible, to support first time writers.

Your views seem typical for N&N. They come in in dribs ad drabs and never amount to much. That comes with the territory. My novel from two months ago, which has good ratings. still has 1-3k views/segment.

I saw a comment elsewhere that some writers (me included) put greater weight on feedback from other authors than general readers. Contrawise some other writers say they care more about what their readers think than other writers.

I wondered about your motivations. For me, I’m much happier if a writer I respect pays me a compliment, than if it is a non-writer, or a writer whose work I am unfamiliar with does the same.

Does that mean I’m writing for other writers? How about you?
Approbation ... is that like regular probation or more like parole? Is it in English you write?

Two-dollar words are fine if you have at least a one-dollar thought

@EmilyMiller I suspect many are waiting until the whole thing is published.
Many? That sounds exciting 😊.
Incidentally, why did you go for the chapter split?
It’s all the fault of @PennyThompson’s attention span really 😉.

More seriously, each Part plays out at a different location (or in a journey to a location). Google Docs on iOS crashes for me when a document is around 17k words, so I was working with separate files anyway. And I didn’t want to deter anyone with a thirty page Lit story.

While some may wait for all six Parts, others can digest one part at a time.

If another author rips your story a new ass, you have to ask yourself, “How valuable is their feedback?”

Anyone for whom I have proofread or beta read will say I can be forthright. But to publicly trash your work (assuming that’s actually what they did)? Well I don’t think that makes their opinion so very valid.

To quote a writer who was much better than me (and I'm not sure if he really said it or it's just attributed to him....

"Perfectly acceptable to insult a man in private. But when You do it in public, people tend to think that you are SERIOUS." - Ben Franklin

oh no now I'll never finish it 😱

I will forever remember one of my Physics professors and this joke:

A mathematician and a physicist walk into a bar. Sitting at the bar is a single, gorgeous woman. The bouncer at the door tells them that they may approach the woman, but they must cover each remaining interval of distance between them in halves.

The mathematician recognises the situation as Zeno's Paradox and thus intractable. She sits down at a table and drowns her sorrows in a glass of wine.

The physicist, meanwhile, rubs her hands together, and says "In ten iterations I will be close enough for practical purposes."

A biology, maths, and physics student are drunk at a party, standing outside a very small building, as two people enter and then three leave shortly after.
They all wonder what this means.

The biology student speaks first, explaining that it's obviously just reproduction. Two people enter, they have some fun, thus three leave.
Satisfied, she wanders off in search of more beer.

The physicist is next. He suddenly realizes that it's just a quantum event. It's not very likely, but it is theoretically possible that a full person simply materialized inside the building.
He goes after the biologist.

Left behind is the maths student, still thinking. He mumbles to himself while holding up fingers. 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2....
Then he enters the building.
