Would you have any qualm about having to kill someone?

Would it bother you if you had to kill someone, whether it be in war or in self-defense?

I certainly wouldn't.

The terrible things I've experienced in my life have made me desensitized to this sort of thing.

It depends on the circumstances and the person involved.

I firmly believe that everyone is capable of murder and killing given proper motivation (have you ever heard of an animal that never bites anyone?), but in combat and self-defense situations there are ways and sometimes the need to defeat the opponent without killing them.

In self defense on the street, in particular, if you kill someone then it does not matter if they were trying to kill you--you are held legally responsible for that persons death in most US States and probably a fair few other places. Because you used "excess force" to defend yourself, you are treated as a murderer. Remember that.

Though, I remember a while back a news thing where there was a guy who was throwing a party/BBQ thing, and walked in on one of his neighbors molesting his daughter. He killed the guy, and the judge ruled it self-defense because the molester was in the mans house. I love Texas.

You know I could do it. Especially if someone was harming my family but I don't think I would ever get over something like that. It would bother me even if it was done in self-defense.

Yes Godfather, I will take care of it...

I think the English have the correct philosophy here when killing is required.

"Right chap, jolly good. Let's move on."

on a side note.. I toured the Guggenheim estate the last time I was in NY and at the Falaise, they point out the areas where scenes from that movie were shot. It was pretty cool to watch the movie after having been there.. and a great tour either way.

just drink it off...

You can't drink off or drug off a conscience, and certainly not regret. There are ways to get rid of it, but that isn't one. It will always be there in the background, behind the wall of foggy mental haze, always poking and nagging at you. No matter how much you ignore it, it will always be around a corner, waiting to pop out as soon as it can.

I think it was you that posted in the quote thread the picture that said "moving on is not about forgetting, it is about accepting what has happened and continuing to live" or something like that. I think that would apply to this situation for most people, as well.

Wouldn't bother me. If I put a bullet in someone's head I'd want it on the news. It would make people think twice about fucking with me and mine.

Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.

I have no desire to hurt anyone, let alone kill them.

If you were in the US military and your superiors ordered you to open fire on large crowds of peaceful protesters with a mounted 50. caliber heavy machine gun, would you do it?

hell yeah, if i don't i will get slaughtered by them.

plus, i would do it anyways because the money is right.

I tend to agree with this. Violence only begets more violence; hatred only begets more hatred.

But there are also times when the violence is not in your control. Sometimes some drugged up, insane dumbass just gets it in his head that it would be fun to go beat up or shoot somebody, or rape somebody, or whatever.

And there is no way to talk to people like that, or stop those situations peacefully. You either have to run, or retaliate. If I'm alone and the only target, I'll be happy to run. But if I'm not the only one in danger, I can and will retaliate.

But of course, retaliation does not mean murder. I don't like hurting normal people either, and I certainly don't want to kill anyone. But sometimes it is necessary to neutralize a serious threat.

No. But, I might shoot the dumb fuck that gave the order.

What if that dumb fuck is foreign military?

Why would foreign military be giving me the order to shoot peaceful protestors, who I--perhaps mistakenly?--assumed would be citizens of my own country?

What protest are we talking about, exactly?

There are so, so many things I could say about that video. But I won't. Instead, I'll stay in the conversation we had going.

No, I wouldn't shoot that CO. It would be a waste of a bullet. He's just following orders too, and is in as big a bind as me. But, I would not shoot innocent civilians either, least of all peaceful protestors. Period.

But there's a reason why I'm not in the military. I don't make a very good soldier. ;)
