If I had an illness that was going to cause me many months of very bad pain and bed confinment. If there was no known cure for the illness and I asked you to end my life with an injection which would send me into peaceful sleep.... would you do it for me?????

The law of the land would state that you would be breaking the law.

P.S. Of course I'm not actually sick in RL :)

Does it have to be an injection? Strangling, pistol, chainsaw not acceptable?

i would use my fantastic Jedi powers to return you to health. or i'd block the pain from your mind and see about letting you get around for the last few remaining months.

Yes I would. I would only be following family tradition. More likely I would give you too much pain medication and claim it was an accident.

Theoretically?

No.

If you want to die, you'll have to kill yourself. I strongly believe that any sort of life, no matter how painful or hard, is better than no life at all. I respect your right to take your own life, but I won't take it for you.

hey, if purple is good enough for Jedi Master John Shaft (aka Mace Windu, aka Samuel L. Jackson), then it's good enough for me.

If I cared about you at all... yes. I have been in that position, facing that situation for myself. I almost had to ask my bst friend to do it.

I believe death is not the worse thing that can happen to you, but rather a baseline existence. You have no capacity for love, joy or goodness when you are dead, but you have no capacity for suffering, grief or evil either. If someones life has reached the point where they will never know happiness again, then they are probably better off dead.

Its not purple, its fucking mauve!

I would not want my loved ones seeing me in such pain. I would want them to remember me in fun and laughter than a skelton of myself in pain....

Death was coming anyway within a couple of months so we all have to say goodbye to each other now or later.... why not now with a smile on my face the the ability to be able to say what you with me having the capacity to undersatnd your words.......

I couldn't do the needle thing.

I could smother your head with a pillow until you ceased breathing.

As long as you didn't struggle too much.
I'm a delicate little flower.

That, and you avoid the needless pain.

I believe in euthenasia in cases where someone is extremely ill. I know I wouldn't want to see a family member suffer and if they asked, I'd help. Yes it would be hard but isn't it hard to watch someone waste away, knowing there's no hope of recovery?

NO!!!!!!!!!!

It is not within my province to do such a thing. You would have to take this action on your own.

In a nutshell, yes. Sometimes compassion for the dying supercedes the legal system. My mother has made it crystal clear to her sons that she expects them to do just that if the need arises. We stand prepared to follow her wishes. I don't see it as the end of a life but as the gift of peace.

here in ohio it is not permitted. I have seen more people than i would care to admit in that situation, many are onlife support...we have removed that frequently to allow nature to take its course....a sad situation for all people involved:(

While I believe that a person who has lived a full life and due to health problems is facing only an existence deserves the right to choose to live or die.... I could not take that life.

I so dearly wish I could say yes. I have my own wishes concerning MY life, but I could not take this action for another person.

My mom-in-law has had to make something like this decision. Her mother is in very ill health and can not make decisions for herself. My mom-in-law has a DNR ( do not resicuitate ) order on the medical chart for her mother. This woman was self sufficiant, lived alone, took excellent care of herself and her affairs, and a tumor in her brain has caused her to lose her memory, control of her bodily functions, and her ability to walk. While she is breathing, she is a mere shadow of the woman she used to be. There is no hope of recovery. She is only going to get worse. The tumor is inoperable and chemo is not working. We are literally watching her fade away into someone we do not know. It is very sad and a hard burden to bear for the family who loves her.

Good point to make the distinction between "killing" and "letting die." TH Oughts is talking about "killing" (although I don't think it would be killing if she wasn't alive in the sense that she was able to experience emotions, if she had no memories, had no recognition of people, events, etc.). I would do that for her, as a doctor, as a friend, even as a stranger if she asked me to. Some may say that I do not have the right to take her life, but I don't think I have the right to leave her be and cause her further pain and suffering, however indirectly.

I would also let her die, by removing life support. Some people are more comfortable with that than actually being the person to inject lethal doses of a substance, or smothering, or whatever. Personally, I don't see a difference, and if one is morally acceptable ("letting die"), then I think the other is just as morally acceptable. It's all the same thing.
