What World Cup?
My response since England left with Becks in tears! Do love to see a man cry!

WOW!

That was something quite awesome. Well played, both teams, but congrats Italy!

Condolences, Snoops, CA and all other Germans. :rose: :rose:

GER-ITA 0-2

2 Italian goals in the last 2 minutes. That's entertainment.

Germany 0 - Italy 2 Final

Goals:
Italy
3. GROSSO Fabio (119')
7. DEL PIERO Alessandro (121+')

You might say the azzurri saved the best for last.

Germany didn't deserve to win on that performance, even England could have beaten them.
Gotta disagree. This was a good games between solid teams. Great attacking against great defending on both sides. Hence the nil-nil for 118 minutes.

LOL That was CRUEL!

Italy well and truly deserved to win like that!

Germany were just holding out for penalties at the end, cos they knew they've got a much better record at shoot-outs than the Italians. The Italians went all out for a win in normal play - kudos to them.

Sad way for the game to end for Germany, but the Italians truly deserved the win.

Italy didn't give them any time on the ball, the Germans had no alternative plan to deal with the Italian defence, where as the Italians cut through time after time with accurate passing. Germany were lucky to get to full time without conceeding a goal. Then again my television is quite small... :D

The Germans were outnumbered. Every time they tried to penetrate the azzurri defense, the ghost of Claudio Gentile rose up and it was more than they could bear to face.

I may be a little biased ... but Germany actually was the better team. We just couldn't convert and payed the price in the end. But Italy didn't play all that well on offense or they would have scored. In the second half they didn't have a single decent chance at scoring.

But you are right ... in those final two minutes the German players had their eyes on the penalty shoot out. Lippi bringing 2 more strikers in overtime actually was worth the risk ... I still don't know if the Italians deserve to advance (especially after that flop penalty against the Aussies ...) but they have advanced.

Damnit ... that cup was supposed to be ours.

p.s., if either you or Lukas Podolski need spanktherapy to get over your grief, let me know. ;)

Sounds great, I could need a good back-to-reality-after-terrible-loss-spank !!!!

Snoopy, :(

missed the first hour, but after that was reminded of why i don't watch much soccer. both teams seemed obsessed with defense. both could not put together an offense, but Germany kept almost getting together in the second part.

as with some other games like chess, defensive preoccupations on both sides creates boredom in the uninitiated.

as with hockey, the hesitancy in attacking is maddening. rather than ever trying to break away, both teams would take their time advancing, indeed NOT advancing, but passing sideways or backwards, while the defense got itself in place (eventually outnumbering the attackers!)

however, in my ignorant opinion, Germany looked better and seemingly would have eventually cashed in on more close approaches to Italy's goal.

i guess the Italians finally put together an offense in the extra time, and used the momentum of the first score to lock things up with a second. the last minutes were truly exciting, and watching German players and fans was very affecting.

just my two cents as an ignorant outsider, but one impressed with the abilities of both teams. (badly played soccer, of course, is ten ten more difficult to watch than world cup stuff.)

our city is hugely italian, so the festivities lasted far into the night.
thanks to all for the educative postings!

I must agree, last night was not the best game of football, but it was pretty good and very close (well, I was only half watching it over the top of my laptop*L*). the difference was that the Italians went out to win it in extra time, where the Germans were playing safe and wanting to push it to penalties. So gaps opened up and the italians used those gaps to their advantage.

I do feel sorry for the german lads and fans, though. what a horrid way to loose (not that there's a good way to loose!)

Italy play very pretty football, when they're not acting and diving all over the place.

VIVE LA FRANCE

Proving, once again that old age and cunning beat youth and talent every time! - oh, and a few dirty moves by Portugal!
