World Cup Thread

What? You have to be joking.

If you saw the other thread I started about the game, you'll know I'm perfectly comfortable with losing. That "fucker" was specifically directed to Straight-8. It's fine to be accused of cheating and diving when we win fair and square, it's even fun and part of the game itself, but to accuse us of dirty moves when we lose a game like yesterday's, it takes a special kind of prick.
In all fainness though, he only talked about "dirty moves". I missed the first half of the game, was there any leg-humping there that I didn't get to see?

pasta vs omelettes,
Ferrari vs Citroen,
Gina Lollabridga vs Brigitte Bardot,

any way you look at it,

Go Forza Azzura!

Your reaction shows me why you support the team you do. All in good fun! and Portugal did have more fouls. Nobody likes a sore loser. :p

Just like they had less fouls than the Netherlands and England. You're right on the sore loser bit there. ;)

Spot on.

Exactly what any self respecting football 'tragic' would say in the circumstances. Portugal like Australia (my team) were beaten by superior diving. Both sets of fans are feeling just a bit pissed off.

We should probaly recruit Greg Luganis as coach for the next World Cup. :)

No hard feelings: I orginally took 'fucker' as a compliment :D (to me AND my team).

The amount of diving in this world cup has pretty much put me off watching it. It's fucking nauseating.

It's an inevitable result of the changes in referreeing guidelines brought in for this competetion. It's won games for certain teams. Footballers are so highly paid, and the cost to their clubs are so high when they get injured, that FIFA seemed to have been pressured intto making football a non-contact sport.

Fuckers

I couldn't agree more :rose:

It is all an unfortunate but longstanding part of the game. It has been an issue in every world cup that I can remember. It gives the losing side something to complain about and cling to.

You either accept the ref is human and calls them as he sees them (and that's part of the game) or you start rooting for a sport that has no subjective element to it. Try baseball -oh no there's the ump and safe or out calls; basketball - oops - fouls. Target shooting - there's always the wind to blame.

The real problem with soccer is that it is so damned hard to get a legitimate goal that way too much of the game turns on penalty kicks. And penalty kicks in turn depend on subjective calls by the ref. There are a lot of possible ways to address that (penalty spot further out (my fav); player out of the game for a while; make the goal larger, to name a few) but try selling those to a committed soccer nation - not bloody likely!

A few more words for you: "Ronaldo short-listed for Best Young Player award" and "Horacio Elizondo nominated for the FIFA World Cup final". ;)

Not a good day for Portugal. Germanyis currently up 2-0 in the 65th minute.

The commentators on ESPN are praising the ref for being even-handed and incontrol of the game, but I wonder how "even-handed" it is when I've only seen one foul called to Portugal's advantage in Germany's half of the field? Actualy, there have been damned few fouls called in germany's half of the field at all!

Fuck.

On the bright side, Schweinsteiger is on my Fantasy Football team. :D
Damn! Ricardo's on mine :D
All down to tomorrow then, I've got one injured Italian against three Frenchmen. ;)

Okay. Does anyone know if there is any chance this game is going to be repeated or if I can watch it online?

I just missed it completely and I am in tears.

I believe i have it in the bag, then. I now have a 15-point lead, give or take half a point, and the same three Frenchmen you have, plus three Italians. If I wanted to play it really safe, all I needed to do would be to bench the Italians and pick the same captain as you. :D

FIFA has highlights (brief) of all games here

You can see more here but you need to know the technical stuff (torrents) and I don't.

You'll probably have missed the one replay I'm sure of by the time you see this, but Telefutura, a Spanish language cable channel has been replaying the matches in prime time and early the following morning (like 0300 or 0400): Check your local listings. (Edited to correct channel reference.)

Thank you very much for your effort. Unfortunately, Telemundo is the only spanish language channel I get, I'm pretty sure.

Going to the link Whisky7up gave me, I cannot get any of the videos to play and I also can't find an obvious hint as to what I might have to to download. Would you maybe be able to help me with that?

The entire game should be available via bittorrent within a few hours.

On the first link (FIFA) you click on the yellow block just under the match details. It's working now although I don't think it was earlier.

As for the second link there is a HELP thread on that forum where I know the answers are. The trouble is (for me, anyway) it's like all computer stuff made easy. I haven't got a clue what it all means. You may, though. Good luck.

Edited to add the guy above seems to know what it's all about.

Germany/Portugal is the only game not repeated on ESPN classic throughout the night and morning. It's on UESPN (or is it ESPNU?), which I don't get.

I officially hate ESPN.

Thank you very much for all the help and suggestions. I will definitely check each one of them out

He does :)

It's still not working for me. All I get is a black screen.
