Pretty Faces Get Men's Brains Going: Study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A beautiful woman's face is like chocolate, cash or cocaine to a young man's brain, according to Harvard University researchers. Their brain-imaging study revealed that while young heterosexual males are indeed capable of finding beauty in another man's face, only a lovely female visage can set off the ''reward centers'' in their brains.

When men in the study were shown pictures of various faces, only the female faces deemed beautiful triggered activity in brain regions previously associated with food, drugs and money, according to findings published in the November 8th issue of Neuron.

The unique effect of the comely female face occurred despite the fact that the men also rated some male faces as ''beautiful.' "It looks like there can be a difference between what the brain 'likes,' an image that is judged to be attractive, and what the brain 'wants,' something that is regarded as a reward in and of itself,'' study author Dr. Hans Breiter, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, said in a statement.

In their experiments, the researchers first asked a group of men to rate how attractive they found the faces--which, unbeknownst to the participants, had already been placed into the categories ``beautiful'' or ``average.''The men's ratings, it turned out, fell in line with the categories, and attractive male faces garnered ratings similar to attractive female faces.

But in the next phase of the study, men in another group were allowed to control how long they viewed a particular face by pressing a key. Breiter's team found that they ``expended effort'' to see the beautiful female faces for a longer time, but for all other faces they tried only to make the faces disappear faster.

Finally, in a third group of men studied with brain imaging known as functional MRI, the investigators found that only the attractive female faces set off the brain's ``reward circuitry.''``It's particularly interesting that the attractive male faces actually produced what could be considered an aversion response, even though they had been recognized as attractive,'' Breiter said. His co-author, Dr. Nancy Etcoff, noted that this research echoes previous work suggesting the human perception of beauty may be ``in-born.''``While we know that experience, learning and personal idiosyncrasies all have an impact on attraction between particular individuals, these results show that this basic reward response is deeply seated in human nature,'' she said in a statement.

At first glance, this seemed amusing to me. Hardly a surprise that a pretty woman stimulates a man's ....head! ;) But upon further study, it made me wonder if there is a universal perception of beauty. The article mentioned that the case study consisted of heterosexual men. It would seem to me that if a group of homosexual men were used, the results just might skew a bit differently. What do you think?

Even though I prefer men, I still enjoy looking at beautiful women too. And while it is rare to hear one man compliment another's looks or agree that a man is attractive, I am sure the brain does acknowledge a pleasing visage no matter the sex. If a face has symmetry and a body is proportioned and is attractive, don't we all agree that the person is good looking? Or is it gender related?

Cash or cocaine to a young man's brain.

And to our old ones. ;)

I believe there is; there have been a number of other more detailed studies on what is physically beautiful and attractive to humans. From studies of baby's finding different faces more attractive (very similar to the study you cited), to a woman who uses computer morphing to find universal facial beauty for all races (with regards to shape and symmetry), to flash cards with different shapes of women's figures finding the same shape (hourglass) being attractive to men worldwide (including men in remote jungle tribes with no external cultural influence). There has been quite a bit of work on this beyond what I mentioned.

I think there are issues of a cultural bias against male homosexuality, and I think that men do not have the all the same physical sexual cues as women - but I can't speak for gay males.

you should record with that machine what a nice looking female ass does to my brain. breast, legs, neck, oh hell i'm just a horny bastard!

bbc series "the human face" relates..

Great post Barb:)

there's a similar article at www.newscientist.com

about six months ago, a bbc doco miniseries called "the human face" presented by john cleese and elizabeth hurley was on over here...
discussed similar ideas..
including the "golden mean"(i think that term..could be wrong..am off to look it up in a mo)..
which was basically a ratio..if the distances between certain features, the langth of your limbs..yadda yadda..conformed to this formula..you where beautifull..no matter what age, culture..:)

they demonstrated this with a "face" grid made out to in those ratios, laid over pictures of different people..elizabeth hurley fit it almost completely...surprised!(not!)

anyway..it's prolly findable if you go to www.bbc.co.uk ..i'll look and post it if i find it:)

there's also little bits on this in most life drawing/portraiture(sp?) texts/classes..:)

Myst...do you smell really good?..do you come in little blue glass bottles with gilding??? ..:)..if soo..put me down for two:)

women are the best medicine

just take the proper dosage.
just remember to take your dose orally
and make sure you keep your perscription filled.

You and i read the same magazines. Discover had that "morphing - universal standards of beauty" thing a while back. Within the last two years, though, i think.

I'm fascinated with the concept of the melding of historically separate cultures and our moving toward a more global skin pigmentation, i.e., almost everyone will be a golden color and the extremes of paleness and darkness will be far more rare in, say, 150 years (six generations), than they are today - at least in places with non-homogenized cultures.

Interesting stuff.

STG and cym, I also subscribe to that magazine and recall the subject being presented there in conjunction with a television special. Zoe, I am not sure if it was the same show you described or not but the similarities are striking. (btw, thanks for the link!)

In the documentary I saw, the researchers used similar hypotheses regarding measurements and distances, as you put it. The only difference was that they used the model Amber Valleta (instead of Liz Hurley) as an example of perfection.

I used the word symmetry in my first post. I believe that is the standard they used to determine that her face was attractive. Her eyes, lips, nose, forehead and cheeks were all aligned and proportioned. They took measurements of both the full face and also in halves. She was perfectly 'even' and symmetrical on both sides.

My guess is that supermodels and some actors and actresses all possess these same configurations and that is why society (or at least a good percentage) can usually agree on their sex appeal.

Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder most of the time. But, there are certain characteristics we all find attractive. Many other studies have proven that evolution has favored height (for both genders) broad shoulders, strong torso and muscles for men and pouty, full lips, larger breasts, thin waists, broad hips and long legs for women.

I tried the "covering half my face and looking in a mirror" test and discovered that I could probably pass for Quasimodo's sister! Actually, not only was I not symmetrical, but I could have made a fortune posing as Pablo Picasso's model!

But, somewhere out there, there is a Frankenstein for me. With poor visual acuity!
