The waiting is the worst part. Tomorrow the submissions are closed and then there's another week of waiting for a Christmas miracle.

If someone typically gives only five's when they vote on contest entries, how do they recognize the exceptionally well-done story?

As for what to say in a PC, well, why did you vote it a four or five? I never give one's or two's. For the VERY infrequent three's, I thank them for the read and wish them luck in the contest.

The same way we recognize the difference in stories for the rest of the year. We can't. Of course all the stories that I have ever voted a five on are not equal, and that's the problem with the five point system. For example, I think that Rhys "Pytor Illiych" is the best contest story out there that I have read. That doesn't mean that I should penalize other excellent stories by judging them against his. And then what if the next story I read is better still?

That's also why I do not do a lot of contest reading when I am involved. I think I have read five stories so far, and have given out 3 five's and passed on the other two. Not that the stories weren't well done, because I think that the quality of stories overall in contests is much higher than the regular stories. It's just that things change when there is a contest.

The fact that this prize money has been jacked up so much for this contest only makes things worse. I've been sabotaged for far less in the past, so I imagine that it will get very nasty when the voting deadline nears. I could use money like most people, but I do this for fun and feedback, and if I win anything I'll likely do what I did with my Valentine's Day prize and give it to charity.

My score hasn't changed in such a way as to look like a sweep. It stands at 4.31 with 58 votes now, lower than I thought it should be, bur I know it has taken at least four hits from one-bombs.

Boxlicker, I'd like to know why you find it necessary to trash every contest story I write? And if you don't care for it you feel you have to post it in the public comments. I'm sorry but if I don't like someone's story I try to explain why in PM. I consider it the decent thing to do to a fellow author. My story was excessively sweet? Have you read many of the entries in the contest? I usually don't comment on feedback but you seem to make it a habit with mine.

Cookie, I have posted mild criticism but I have never trashed any of your stories. I have posted PC on three contest entries, and I have copied them here. On the two from this year, I voted a four because I thought them to be good but not good enough to be fives. On the one from last year, I voted a five. On the last one, I pointed out something wrong with the way the story appeared, which did not reflect on the story itself.

good but the sex seemed a bit abrupt and contrived. The dialogue didn't ring very true either, and I can't believe the guy could take her out of the house like that. Interesting but not very believable.

An intriguing story, a bit melodramatic but it certainly held my interest, right to the climactic moment. I had no sympathy for the man but I had to wonder about the blonde's motivation. There is something wrong with the way things print here. Extra spaces are shown even though there should be none

Last two votes on 'Last Christmas'. no PC, but managed to loose 6 points.
No PC makes it difficult ot determine if trolled or by some that are not leaving PC's.

Two days ago I had 60 votes and a score of 4.74..... today... 64 and 4.59 anybody wanna do the math?

I find the 1 bombs the sincerest form of flattery.

Well the new one is up. It is going to pass the old one in numbers, quick I bet. Started off good for the first 3,4 votes, then a whole squadron of trolls decended to send it to the cellar quick. Amazing how it can jump 15 votes and the score plummet.

Old one got hit pretty hard to, just less votes.

What amazes me is that there are evidently authors among us so worried about 'winning' that they 'vote' to insure their own good placement. That takes a very, very, sad individual that has to denegrate others to feel better. Few need the money any more than I, but I would never even consider doing something so pathetically immature and senseless. I also have the sense and reading ability to know my crap is just ramblings anyway.

If you haven't yet looked or read, the new story is sequel to the Halloween storybut will stand on it's own.

I would NEVER mind an honest 1 bomb... just tell me why.

Like I said... I don't even mind the torpedo 1 bomb.. says they think my story is too good.

But... those are annoying even if they are flattering. I would prefer HONEST votes. I may be grateful for 5 bombs.. but actually I'd rather have an honest vote and an honest comment.

Naw - this wasn't a troll. This was just someone without the balls to allow the PC thermometer to reflect the actual vote. Well, I suppose that might meet someone's definition of a troll. For me, it just meets the definition of a hypocrite.
