Why is there NO wholesome entertainment?

We don't watch a lot of tv in our house, but over the holidays we kind of got on an old movie kick. I enjoyed watching them again with my boys...I tend to like classics more than the new animated kid friendly shows anyhow.

What we watched:

Where The Red Fern Grows
Old Yeller
Shane
To Kill A Mockingbird
Cocoon

Were you punishing them?

I understand this. There are very few shows and movies that are decent without being watered-down and saccharine. Most shows with a brain are usually all about sex and violence. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but most of the popular shows on TV are about someone becoming the world's biggest shit bag.

I have really liked Kiefer Sutherland's series Touch though. It's smart, has good characters, and you don't feel dirty after watching it.

I was sitting with my mom when I saw Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures on CBS for the first time one Saturday morning.

When it was over, I turned to her. "Whoah."

It seems grandiose to say, but that was a pivotal moment in animation.

Created by Ralph Bakshi

Well, there's why. Bakshi's an old school kind of guy.

"Yeah, whoah. That was...different."

"I really liked it."

"Me too!"

i fucking loved that shit. it did not last long.

Yes, BUT he was always a "fuck you, mainstream" kind of guy as well. He liked to try daring shit. They let the guy who did Coonskin and Fritz The Cat revive a dead franchise, to be lost amongst all the other crap, and he instead got a collection of people working with him who would define the next two decades of animation, and a mouse who broke the 4th wall and parodied old stuff in a really witty way.

That's because the renard_ruses of the world accused the show of promoting cocaine use.

For being a super formula Super Chicken needed to save the day, Fred sure experimented a lot with the ingredients.

Same creators as Rocky & Bullwinkle...Rocket J Squirrel could kick Mighty Mouse's ass anytime.

Don't get me wrong. Nothing but love and respect for Bakshi. Him and Bluth guided a lot of young animators who would make '90s cartoons something else and the later '00s computer animated ones.

Bite me. Those are all really good movies. I still cry at the end of Shane when the little boy is calling him over and over.

That's what I meant....Shane AND Old Yeller???

You were trying to make them cry.

Oh. Well....no....but....shit. They didn't cry...farm boys and all that. Just me. But I'm a crier when it comes to movies.

I'm surprised you knew it. Nobody seems to know what that movie is.

Shane!....Shane!....

You probably watch the Littlest Hobo reruns every morning....

The final scene in Princess Bride makes me cry...every...single..time. Can't help it.

if that line doesn't get you laid, i don't know what will.

Admission: It's a sure-fire deal-closer IRL.

And it's also true...when Peter Falk says "as you wish" and tips his hat, I'm done.

that movie gave me nightmares.

that's because it's the most depressing movie ever made. it's great, but i barely made it through it once and it'll never happen again. even jennifer connely having fake lesbian sex was fucking depressing and that's just wrong.

I can't even remember what the ending was.

Never Ending Story!

I think that will be next. It seems to fit my theme of trying to traumatise my kids. I think a horse dies.
