Why is pot illegal?

Don't know.. Clinton had 8 years to make progress. I guess the polls were against it.. too bad

ignorance and blinkered vision...

...by all those who've never smoked...

if pot's illegal cigarettes should be too..i mean, fair's fair, right? and cigarettes are (in my opinion) worse for your health, but neither one is all that good for ya

I saw an interesting show on PBS about this. They said that during prohibition, pot was legal. In fact they said it was sold, very cheaply, at drugstores, in pre rolled cigarettes. The thing was, it wasn't fashionable among white wealthy people. The people who were buying it were slaves, and others of foreign descent (god I hope thats the pc way to say that). Eventually, those in power decided that pot was "Making black people go crazy", and that there would be some kind of uprisng in the streets. It was made illegal very quickly...and here we are. I was stoned when I watched it (as I am now and every darn time ya'll see me) so forgive me if my memory is hazy.;)

In the 1950s Hollywood...

...as usual went hysterical over pot smoking and produced a number of anti-pot propaganda films, (probably backed by the Governemnt).

Jeez talk about funny...they couldn't even film a decent orgy (which all pot smokers were meant to indulge in).

If you ever get the chance, try and see them...

Hard to believe it didn't happen, what with all those pro-legalization folks in the Republican Party...oh well. Must be Clinton's fault... I'm sure President Bush will succeed where Clinton has failed... ;)

Only if there's money in it...

...for him...

The way I heard it listening to my parents talking about it, Harry Anslinger(sp) and his "Untuchables" would have been out of work unless they could get congres to declare SOMETHING illegal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but has anyone ever heard of anyone dieing in an accident over being stoned? No, not that I know of. One of the many reasons pot is illegial, is its considered a narcotic, a bad substance, therfore more desired by our youth. Alchohol is socially accepted, easy to obtain, and kills a helluva lot more people. Alchohol is plastered across our televisions, magizines, and billboards. Now, its not the alchohols fault, the dumbass's behind the wheel are to blame. As far as pot, cannibus, weed, dope, grass, trees, hydro, purple haze, and all the other names that go for it, is concerned, legalize it. Let people grow it, go after the drugs that actually cause a problem and let humble pot smokers get their daily fix of the laughs and munchies. Shit, we damn near built the fast food and junk food industry!

It is illegal because the government cant find a way to tax it without somehow endorsing the use of it.

Because they'd expose themselves as hypocrites if they legalized marijuana at the same time they're publicly backing anti-tobacco legislation.

The tobacco companies would LOVE to get in on selling legalized pot. Many have had packs designed, etc., for years. And smoking's become unfashionable, so politicians are against it. It would be hard to back both anti-smoking and pro-legalization without facing public backlash from both sides.

It can't help, right?

Several years ago, an Amtrak derailment that killed several people was blamed on the Engineer being high on MJ.

A couple of months ago, a lady here in Las Vegas was indicted for running down several teens pciking up trash by the freeway. She was allegedly stoned at the time, although the specific drug she was stoned on wasn't specified that I recall.

There are several fatal accidents a year on I-15 between LV and LA. At least one each year is blamed on driving under the influence of drugs -- often MJ is specified, more often it's just "drugs."

Whether it's legal or not, driving while high, drunk, stoned, hung-over, taking antihistamines, or talking on a cell-phone is a bad idea.

on topic: Marijuana (and other drugs) is illegal because our government didn't learn from Prohibition that making something the people wnat to use illegal only makes criminals rich.

LOL, thanks for the info Weird Harold. I have just never heard of any around were I live, or in the state, though, like you said, I'm sure there are.

why do you think we have the song...

(forgive my Spanish, you know how bad my English is)

La cucaracha, La cucaracha (Pancho Villa)
No por que fuminar.
Por Que la falta, Por que la falta,
Una pitter par andar.

It was a shot at the Mexican-American community.

Why pot is really illegal

Back in the day a guy called Hearst owned a lot of newspapers. Not only the papers themselves, but also the presses, the distrubution network of trucks and newsagents, and papermills, and indeed the lumber yards themselves -- a nice tidy vertical monolopy. Now the only problem for good ol' William Randolf was the jupe (hemp) growers were making crazy good, reliable, cheap paper from the same plant maryjane comes from. This was eating into his paper-making operation. He financed a series of movies (not the government, who indeed was taxing the hell out of the product already) about how smoking a J drove good people to axe murder their families. Thusly, because they saw it in a movie, the nation went into a reefer-induced (non-inhaling though) panic -- and all things maryjane related were outlawed, including the harmless, unsmokable (well it wont make you high), and useful hemp plant.

So there. Rosebud

Wow, i don't think that i understood all of that but i'll revisit it after a snack. Damn these munchies.

I have been known to get stoned. I think pot should be decriminalised for home use. I do not think it should be legalised for the following reasons:-
1. To legalise something is to condone its use. Our hospitals are already unable to cope with the number of patients who have smoking and alcohol related illnesses/injuries (as high as one in five in some western countries including Australia). It can cause lung cancer, kill brain cells and rot internal organs. Contrary to popular belief, pot is not harmless. You can crash cars, jump over balconies, have epileptic fits and schizophrenic episodes under the influence of pot. I have a friend who became schizophrenic after first time pot use. His poor addled brain has never recovered.

2. Pot, like any other drug, can be psychologically addictive. Long term dope smokers generally become lethargic, uninterested in work or even sex. If they do retain some libido, babies can be born with handicaps due to damage which long term marijuana use can cause to male and female reproduction systems.

3. Anything which psychologically retards life's realities (alcohol, LSD, heroin, coke, bennies, marijuana) makes us a poorer society, unable to problem solve without something to heighten/deaden our emotions.

4. Amsterdam legalised pot. It has one of the highest rates of heroin addiction in the world. Not every pot smoker becomes addicted to heroin. Almost every heroin addict however, began as a pot smoker.

In short, the criminal element associated with pot ought to be stopped. Decriminalising it would do this. To legalise pot however, would be to deny the real dangers that can be associated with this drug as much as any other.

Dow

had a hand in criminalizing pot, from what I've read. It does have something to do with the hemp plant being able to produce more paper and putting a damper on sales.

Crazy- the only type of evidence that pot has any type of effect on fetuses (feti?) hehe is that male sperm count is reduced with long-term use of pot and a fetus typically is born with a lower birth weight. Of course because they have not done extensive studies as to the effect pot has on unborn fetuses, we are still largely in the dark about what may result in a mother smoking while pregnant.

Yeah.....

I used to take a deep, deep - bong hit......

And exhale it......

Right up my pregnant wife's pussy.....

And it didn't effect any of my kids.
