just kidding.... rhetorically speaking, In high school and later in college, I competed in what I'm sure was a similar event. In grad school, I was often a judge. I found that some male competitors wouldn't listen to advice from anyone.... male or female. I actually had competitors complain to me after an event when they were judged "lower" than someone else.

I'll admit that I never had a female competitor complain, and they were almost always eager for advice.

I could have something to do with the naturally different competitive nature of men.... or then again..... maybe not...

I too judge students on the high school level and have had this come up. However, I was much more disturbed by the gender bias when I was competing ~ in jr. college speaking contests. I found this to be especially male dominate back east and in the southwest. It was almost like we are just 'token' females in men's contests! humph ~ I showed them when I kicked their @$$es in contests!!!!!

I know how frustrated you are...I had kids from Churchill chew me out in front of a coach that allowed it at state octos because they disagreed with me. However, it has happened to me from men and women. Really it's just a pride issue, and probably gender does come into play with some males because of insecurity.

HOWEVER, you know very well yourself that many many men respect women for their intellect and ability. So, please don't hate on all men, just the masogonists, who don't constitute all men.

Arrghhh... High School.... There is something about that whole age bracket that teens can't think straight. I found it amusing when I was a student teacher during college that the same self serving, argumentative, derivative mentality was still there. Thank god those days are long gone.
