I want to be clear about this, and this is in answer to BG also: I did not mean that as an allegation that you HAD posted personal info; it was an example of the kind of thing you COULD do if you were so inclined, a way of "attacking" someone you felt deserved it. A worst-case scenario. I do not think you have done it.

I think it's okay to chat with anyone; to me that doesn't mean I excuse other behavior of theirs. Maybe that comes from five years of working with seriously fucked up kids. People aren't black or white...err...all good or all bad to me. No one since, let's see, I can't think of anyone who was all one or the other. Sadaam Hussein, maybe? You get the point.

I'll concede, though, that if I think some chick on here is a blatant racist--Angelique, I think that was her name, comes to mind--I'm most likely to engage her in a conversation about that issue, and attempt to point out the errors of her position. I'm extraordinarily unlikely to flirt with or become friends with her.

Another problem is that there are some obvious racists, like Angelique and Makofin (they used to come here and post about how they made "beaners" eat their own shit and stuff like that; I don't know if you remember them), and then there are a lot of posters who for all I know are racists but I haven't seen it. Is atmas a closet racist? I know him really well, so I can say, no. Have you ever made a racist post? I have no idea. I like you though; tomorrow is someone going to spring on me that you're a racist? I seriously doubt it, but I hope you get the point.

I know people aren't black and white. And if you want to soul search individuals on this forum and find the good in them, go for it.

But when I see people chit chat with the likes of KS, Ishmael and Retrieval, it just makes me shake my head.

I can understand arguing or debating them (to an extent) but I can't understand discussing recent movies with them or talking about what you had for dinner with them. They are hateful bigots, why not discuss your dinner with one of the other thousands of registered users. There isn't exactly a shortage of people here that would limit your choices.

I thing I started this same thread in 2003, with the same results. The enablers either dodge the question, or avoid the whole issue, while the known bigots try to make the issue about anything other than racism.

The mistake we tend to make is to attribute racist beliefs to individuals, thinking that if we shun, scream at, or beat them over the head long enough, they'll suddenly see the light. Or if we just keep repeating the "racism is bad" mantra over and over long enough, it will magically go away one day. But they won't, and it won't, because our society, like many others in the world, needs racism, and so it keeps cranking out racists.

Until you understand that, and try to figure out how so many racists keep thriving when we've known racism was bad for centuries, you're just as deluded as the racists are.

(And I'm not saying "you" to Q in particular, because I think he knows this.)

When so many of the lit populace chats merrily with a racist/bigot, they are essentially saying "I see your racism and I just don't care enough about it, so I'm going to chat with you about my day".
