Things might be more equal now, but during my youth, it was almost unheard of for a girl or woman to make the first move, except when the guy was a rock star. I always felt it was a matter of girls and women having extremely high standards, so high that hardly anybody could meet them.

I wrote an essay about Ann Landers and Dear Abby, saying they were largely responsible for the inequality. I still believe this is so, although neither of them is around any more.
