I'd like to know what everyone on here reads, other than stuff on Literotica.com.

Who is your favorite contemporary author. Why?

TERRY PRATCHETT

TP is my favorite. His novels are weird, hilarious, and totally original. I've heard that he has sold more books than any other Brit author over the last twenty years. Hardly anyone in the US has ever heard of him.

deep dark confessions

I read lots of novels-- no television watching here... currently I am in a "romance" rut... before that it was sci-fi, fantasy, and international intigue in that order.

My favorite author, though, is David Weber of the "Honor Harrington" series.

His ability to make an incredibly complex battle in space easy to visualize while his characters are fully developed distinguishes his writing.

I haven't heard of him, but he sounds interesting. I think I'll start a list.

Thank you for getting the ball rolling.

Does anyone on here read Robert B. Parker?

I have several favorites, I just love to read whenever I get the chance. Here are my choices

Stephen King
Amanda Ashley - She has a wonderful vampire series
Dean Koontz
Tom Clancy
Ann Rice - I loved her "Beauty and the Beast Trilogy"

There are others that I like but these are the ones I'd choose from first.

Tough to pick just one, but I'll say Janet Evanovich because I've never read anything of hers that I didn't absolutely love.

"When I was a little girl I used to dress Barbie up without underpants. On the outside, she'd look like the perfect lady. Tasteful plastic heels, tailored suit. But underneath, she was naked. I'm a bail enforcement agent now --also known as a fugitive apprehension agent, also known as a bounty hunter. I bring 'em back dead or alive. At least I try. And being a bail enforcement agent is sort of like being bare-bottom Barbie. It's about having a secret. And it's about wearing a lot of bravado on the outside when you're really operating without underpants. Okay, maybe it's not like that for all enforcement agents, but I frequently feel like my privates are alfresco. Figuratively speaking, of course. " High Five by Janet Evanovich

nora roberts as both nora roberts and jd robb are great books...inteliigent romance novels where not everyone's perfect, the women don't wait for the men to save them and the sex is steamy :)

And btw mathgirl...I'm American and I can tell you Terry Pratchett is huge here!

Got to agree with Mathgirl here. Terry Pratchett is probably one of the best authors I have ever read.
I have to limit myself to one or at the most two chapters a day when I read his novels otherwise I would just sit and read the whole thing in one go (which I did for the first three).

Also Just to throw in another name; the 'Lovejoy' series by Johnathan Gash.

(And I never miss any articles written by David Robinson in the UK Computer Shopper)

Gosh, there are so many to choose from. I am an omnivorous reader. I like Carl Hiaasen, Diana Gabaldon, and Anne Rivers Siddons, but that's just three of them. My daughter sort of turned me on to Jennifer Crusie, and while I was up in Pittsburgh visiting her I read two of her books.

I have read Rice's Beauty trilogy. My daughter compelled me to buy them for her at an age when she would have been too young to be in here, much less contribute to anything. This was because she knew that the people at Dalton's--or maybe it was Waldenbooks, I forget which--probably wouldn't have sold them to her. I figured that at sixteen, it was useless to try and censor her reading; besides, she'd already ferreted out and borrowed my Nancy Friday books four years before.

My latest favorite is Terry Goodkind of the "Sword of Truth" epic novels.

However I read almost anyone writing Science Fiction or Fantasy and have only found a handful who were truly horrid.

Author! Author!

This is great. Keep them coming.

Still haven't heard from a Joe R. Lansdale fan yet. Now some of his stuff is weird!

#1 all time favorite books are the red dwarf books, based on the series. grant and naylor are EXCELLENT (hopes TheEarl is agreeing)

#2 is Dean Koontz

#3 Ann Rule (true crime...)

#4 Stephen King

#5 Jude Deveraux (romance...sigh)

For general fiction I like Robert Stone, for sci-fi I read Gregory Benford, and when i feel the need to learn something I read David Halberstam or David Mccullough. and for pleasure my S/O I use her for braille:p

I have never read Pratchett, but my Danish friend Binky has quoted every line he has ever written, so i feel like i have.

Stephen King has been my reigning fave since I was ten.
Dean Koontz, though he's gotten all preachy and uplifting lately; I much prefer his "Strangers" era.
Richard Laymon, whom I only just discovered but he kicks utter ass.
Bently Little, especially The Store and The Association because, ya know, would it really surprise anyone if they were true?

I'm just a lifelong horror slut ;)

Sabledrake

Lois McMaster Bujold ... The Vorkosigan series.

I reread Heinlein constantly.

Diane Duane ... Her Wizard series is good.

Roland of course.

Spider Robinson.

Any thing on my shelvs.

Diane

When I first opened this thread earlier today I started to go on my typical rant about how Joe R. Lansdale is the greatest writer on the planet but, due to past experience I figured no one would care or even know who the hell he was.

Finally, another Lansdale fan! And he just came out with a new book last week! For the uninitiated, check out www.joerlansdale.com

Much of his stuff is out of print and hard to find but if you can get your hands on any of it, it's well worth it!

I have too many favorites to list just one...

Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy, Diane Carey, Stephen King, etc. But any story teller that allows me to join them on their adventure pulling me in is my favorite flavor of the moment. I've always been a Dickens, and Twain fan so probably any author who makes me want to come back and reread his work is also high on my favorites list. I just finished a book by an obscure author who only goes by the name Dunkin. (Yep, just like the donuts. LOL) It's a fantasy that predates King Arthur's legend, and takes a whole new approach about dragons, and the Excalibur legend, and is fast paced as well. It's only sold online at Booksurge which is probably why he's not as yet well known. I also purchased several copies of his book of Love Poems for Christmas gifts, and they compare with Neruda's in many ways, but I think are much better by comparison. I'm saving my copy for my lover as a Valentine's Day present.

OK, is everybody sitting down? I don't read books. Never really have. I started one once, but never finished it.

I have a condition where I can't sit still for that long of a time. I can't read just bits and pieces, because I don't remember what I read when I get back to it, later. So, I end up reading that part again. And, there is no way I can make enough time to read one in one sitting. I have claustrophobia and panic attacks. No biggie, really, but it's just me.

So, are you still sitting down? I don't even watch that many movies. I haven't been to the movies in years. I don't like crowds. Yes, strange, I know, but that is the way I am. It goes along with my condition of not being able to sit still for long periods of time. For some reason, it seems I am wasting time.

Oh, I watch movies on TV, but not really that much. I do like some of the classics and have seen them. Steven King, and Hitchcock are worth sitting still for. I also love To Kill a Mockingbird. That is one of my all time favorites. Yes, I am sure the book was even better. I hear that sort of thing all the time.

Being a musician, I love musicals. West Side Story is a classic, as it The Sound of Music. I even like The Wizard of Oz. I think it is a classic, too. I could go on and on, much like some of you can talk about books.

I have a friend who is a big book reader. He says I am nobody if I don't read. Of course, I know he is an idiot to even talk that way. After all, he can't stand musicals. He sees no reason to stop the plot and break out into a song. But, then he just doesn't understand. We all have our favorite things, don't we.

Anyway, no I don't read books. Sometimes I wish I did, but I do get by OK. Much as my friend gets by without liking musicals.

Only reason I didn't mention Stephen King is that I haven't read him much just lately. Actually, I think he's a great storyteller and he has a keen eye for people's inner landscapes and the human condition. My prediction is that our great-grandkids will at some point "have" to read him, the same as we had to read Hawthorne in school, although he would probably be horrified at such an idea.

I don't mind, DVS, that you have some kind of neurological condition that precludes you sitting down and reading a book. The only non-readers that really piss me off are the ones who loftily sniff, "I don't sit around with my nose buried in a book," but are so addicted to TV soaps--and I include the evening ones as well as the daytime ones--that it colors their whole view of human interaction.

And a few of mine......

Dean Koontz - Robert Jordan - Terry Brooks - George R.R. Martin -
R.A. Salvatore - Sara Douglas - Tom Clancy - David Eddings

Just to name a few.........

I remain,

DVS,
I really feel sorry for someone who can't read books. I realize you can't help it, and it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of, but you do miss out on things I wish you could enjoy. Of course, I probably miss out on a lot because I don't watch TV. I'm willing to take that chance, though.

This is fun! I'm learning a lot from those who responded. I'm getting a nice list of authors to try. Watch out, Library!

A Joe Lansdale fan! Yay!

More contributions, please.

Diane
