White Supremacists Rally in Kansas

Look at the bright side, you aren't from Mississippi. The perception that we are all born with a pilowcase over our heads and a match to light a cross in one hand with a bible in the other is alive & well. When I first moved up here, the moment anyone heard I was from Mississippi they instantly felt comfortable telling me their favorite off color jokes.

-Colly

I know the feeling, Colly. Alabama's right next door to Mississippi (and I even lived there for almost two years).

There are plenty of idiots here, I admit, but not everyone's like that.

I've found I can stare them down pretty quickly when they start with the racist remarks to me. When you don't immediately react to what they say, they start to become uncomfortable. To be honest though, it's been several years since anyone's said anything like that to me. I silently pulled out a picture of my daughter (who's part black), and then told him who she was. Apparently, the older gentleman who made the remark wasn't as proud of being a racist as he thought.

KKK

I live in just about the whitest state in the country, but we had really strong KKK here as well. They detest Catholics, too, and they used to burn crosses just over the river from the town I went to high school in. That side of the river was quite predominantly protestant. Our town has the oldest synagogue in the state and a good sized Catholic population.

It's everywhere. Narrow tribal thinking, and a feeling of being threatened by the Other.
