What's really behind this new 'friendship' between America and Russia?

Well for a start we can discount the signing of the disarmament treaty. As both sides are allowed to stockpile their warheads, there is no disarmament. And as Russia agreed not to raise the question of MDS then that avoided any nasty rows between the two.

No, the real reason for Bush's cosy get together with Pultsin rests on the very different needs of the two countries.

Russia, economically bankrupt would like nothing better than to join the globalisation of the world. Yes the same globalisation which is causing so many protest marches and clashes. And how better to join this rich club than to openly woo the greatest globialiser of them all?

America desparate for new friends and allies since Bush has systematically dismantled old ones, is quite happy to be wooed by it's once former enemy. She wants people to guard her back whilst Bush continues with his 'war' on terrorism. Something that Russia considers a small price to pay to join country club set.

So forget arms treaties and body language between the two men and the nice things they're saying to each. At the end of the day they both want different things.

And it's not clear how well their new found friendship will flourish if Bush goes ahead with his MDS, and when he starts getting the requests for financial help from Russia.

The Russians want cut price McDonalds franchises and the Americans want cut price caviar???

Russia has more reasons to be concerned about creeping Islamic fundamentalism than the US has. Any problems churning in Lower Asia could soon give Russia bellyache.

Russia wants the Big Macs.

America just wants a friend...

I think Russia loses out on the deal. Anyone who has Bush as a friend will always be wondering what the hell he's going to do next.

:)

Maybe because Russia is the geographically closest 'true' ally we could get in that area. India wouldn't have much to do with the US for the reasons we want, Iran still doesn't like us very much, and any other republics in that area can't be trust more than Russia.

Yes that comes into it as well. But what will Bush do if Russia really needs help against terrorism.

Will he go in and give full support?

I don't think so...

It moves America too far away from her own agenda.

What do you mean?

America wants an increased share?

Maybe...

:)

"Clowns to the left of me,
jokers to the right.
Here I am,
stuck in the middle with you."

Yep, it's a plot. Cutting both of our nukes by 2/3rds still makes us a formidible force.

Between our technology and industry and their resources, well, you're fucked old chap.

Damn, that Bush boy. He's soooooooooooooooo stupid. ;)

I can't help wondering what Russia would do if Bush continues with this invasion of countries 'harbouring' terrorists.

If America gives only minimal support to Russia then I can see it being one of the most short-lived friendships in history...

I'm glad that, at last, you finally agree with me...

Well the US has lots of money and equipment we could give our 'ally'. Who wouldn't blow a few 10's of billions of dollars when world wide domination can come of it.

Not any more you don't...

Even your top military men are saying an invasion against Iraq will cost too much in money, arms and men...

And have advised against it...

Bush is running out of rhetoric...

:D

Hell Bush can take some demilitarized equipment and old weaponery and give it to Russia and I am sure they would accept it. Afterall it probaly would be a step up from what they have now.
And besides that the US will go to any lengths necessary to get more fine Russian mail order brides on the market.

Well Russia has OIL
The guys with the camels will pipe down if their customers go elsewhere. What else do they have that we want?

Has anyone noticed though...

that the dichotomy between the two is already showing through....

George W. Bush has talked mostly about terrorism...

Vladimir Putin has talked mostly about the economy...

And they shook hands over stockpiling nuclear warheads...

The ploy is oh so clever, they have you confused already.

Yep, oil, nukes, natural resources. Hell, the Chinese didn't even see this one coming.
