What's cookin', good lookin'? Part II

The Fuji Apple is my fav.
Haven't seen the Sweetie.
Pink Lady is very good, also.

Yes, the honey crisp is good.
There was an article in Smithsonian magazine a few years ago about a resurgence of old time apple varieties. It described the unique flavors of each.
I'll see if I can find it and post a link.

Here it is. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/apples-of-your-eye-71328777/?no-ist=&page=1

Nice! I grew up with an old apple tree on the property, probably from the original owners and used to make apple jack. Legend in those parts was that Johnny Appleseed had planted it ;) and that's what I chose to believe :D I have no idea what it was, but certainly like nothing you can buy in the store now. Small, candy apple green going to blush where the sun hit it. Tart and firm, they were excellent for baking and for cider. I went back there recently, and its gone :(

Apples are my desert island food. I love the immense variety in this fruit. I like modern Ines, and the old heritAge ones. It amazes me we lost our way with some tasteless ones for a few decades, but they were still beautiful! I do not love a floury apple :( but tart or deeet is fine, and the juiciness of a Fuji I agree with tallcajun, is a remarkable thing. I have read so much about honey crisp I really want to taste one!

Don't you get them there? :(
I will take a pic of my Sweetie before I eat her, she's beautiful in a non-apple-conventional kind of way :)

Sweetie! She's beautiful :D and yes, very yellow.

I made this pork chop recipe last night: Grilled Pork Chops with Scallions Garlic and Herbs.

I made some substitutions that I think turned out better than the original. Instead of thick chops, which can turn out dry and tough, I bought pork loin (not tenderloin, though that would work as well) and cut steaks about 3/4 of an inch thick, pounded them out to about 1/4 inch and fried them at high heat very quickly. This is my preferred pork chop method, not to mention that pork loin sections are pretty darn cheap.

Instead of fennel seed I used fennel powder (cheap at the Asian food markets) and followed the recipe on everything else. Magnifico  :) Inexpensive, super tasty, fast.. what more is there?

Has anyone ever made chawanmushi?
Oh hell, who am I kiddng..

Meeks, have you ever made chawanmushi? :p
If yes, any tips as to what works best to include for colour/texture?

Yes :) I don't know if I've ever posted about it. It's kind of a lot of work, IMO. It is one of Mister's favorites so I make it from time to time. I use chicken, shrimp, fresh shiitake, carrot, gamaboko (fish cake), watercress, and ginko nuts. Any combination works. It's like treasure hunting but with food. ;)

Mine it not so pretty, I think I had very little to add to it at the time. The egg is delicate and tastes delicious so the fillings I think can be sparse and it will still be good.

I was wondering how difficult it was. I can see where it would be hard to make it pretty, too. Fiddly work, but yummy. Sounds just like something I would love to make. Some day :D Thanks!

I've already eaten. I'm making French toast. It's thick, stale sourdough that I bought from a bakery. It'll have to sit for a day or two.

*dancing to music... hmmm* *sneezing* I've got some blackberry jalapeno jam left. Pecans I was cracking and toasting yesterday. Molasses. Unopened package of bacon. *taking up space*

*throws eggshells in hydrangeas* *runs back inside*

This needs a pic (or 3) posted in Cookie's planning her day thread.

Seriously: running, posing and blackberry jam? We NEED a pic. It's just not nice to tease like this.

Cat:
"This cat food is disgusting."
"These biscuits are garbage."
"Your feeble attempt at cheese treats make me sick."
"Oh you bought some delicious cod for yourself? That'll do."
