A trojan horse which waits and waits and once an hour reverses one bit at random on your hard drive would ruin your system long before you noticed it. If the trojan was in a really interesting/udseful program it would not need to be a virus.

And before you ask, yes I know it was done on mainframes in the mid-1960's.
