It is a remarkably simple process to acquire a firearm in the US unless otherwise prohibited: obtaining a passport or driver's license requires more time and paperwork.

We make mistakes.

Very charitable of you. Most people, yourself obviously excluded, hold police officers to a higher standard of conduct with regards to firearm usage. We expect more professionalism than your stereotypical "good guy with a gun", just achin' to be the "hero" at the first opportunity.

De-escalation of a situation is a lost art.

The post-9/11 mindset of police officers contains an interesting dichotomy that is not easily reconciled

The police tell the public: "If you see something, say something"
The police tell themselves: "If you see something, shoot something".

The guy who called the cops did everything exactly right: He saw a neighbor's door open (the screen door was shut, the lights were on in the house) at 2 a.m.). He called the non-emergency number of the local police.

A white officer with 18 months experience (Not a lot of experience, but not a rookie either) showed up, drew his weapon, panicked (but had the foresight to turn off his body camera first) and dropped the "perp" with a single shot.

This is wrong. There should be consequences for this "tragic mistake". Yes, this is Monday morning quarterbacking, but if police are going to demand respect (and occaisional boot-licking from AJ and Ishmael) they are going to have to realize it works both ways.

In order to get a firearm here, you have to fill out a form 4473 and swear under penalty of perjury that you aren't a prohibited person, produce TWO different forms of ID proving you are who you say you are AND that you live where you say you live. Then you get to pay the gun store owner and go home without your purchase.

It then takes TEN FUCKING DAYS before you can go back to the gun store to pick up your new firearm AND attest that you have a "State approved" secure way of storing said firearm before they let you have it. Then you have to lock it into your car trunk for the trip home.

In contrast, it took me 1 trip to the DMV and less than 2 hours to get my real ID and all I had to do was present some paperwork to the guy behind the counter and pay the fee.

Yeah, it's a lot easier to get a Real ID than buy a gun here.
