Not enough pay to care about your problems. That and companies are purposely pushing out experienced workers who have been there long enough to make more than minimum wage. This creates workers that are not loyal and don't give a shit about finding an item for you.
If I can just pitch in from the opposite side
All my staff have been with me for many years, the 'new boy' now having notched up 14 years.....but it seems these days that no-one rings up to ask a polite question any more? It's all aggressive and confrontational from the start, as if the customer feels that is what must be necessary for them to get an answer. It isn't, and quite often these days, I find that I take over calls where the customer is nasty because I don't feel it's fair that my staff should have to deal with that during their working day.
Simple example from the last week - I took over a call from a woman who was swearing at one of my staff because she'd received a book in a different format from a previous edition. I had to point out that we had included a letter and explanatory leaflet with her order form which detailed the reasons for the change....at which point the anger changed to embarrassed huffiness
